a few Midwest Meet Pics...

There was only one tree and it was at the turn in the road. it was also perfectly flat, so no winching would have been able to help in the goo.

 

Tim had swampers, and I had my bfg MT's, and I think Tim is running LSD just as I am...

 

I only got pics Saturday at the spot between the mud roads. and Sunday before the law showed up...

I think you will be alone on that. I think this may have soured the ambition to go play on flat land ever again for most people. If you do go play in the mud have a friend or family member that owns either a Military Helicopter, hovercraft or a tank tractor and a lot of guts.

Or a winch with 100' of cable, various 8'lengths of #8 rebar and a sledgehammer. Pound the rebar into the ground every 110', or where needed and winch yourself along. One can also make a deadman pickpoint by burying a log with the end of your towline tied to it, or a piece of wire with a loop on it so you don't have to dig it back up. Winches are a lot cheaper than expensive tow bills.

Irony?, well, I was looking at the line up pics and asked my wife what she saw and that you guys were doomed from that point on. I really hope no one drove on the grounds.

 

 

 

Not a bad turn out at all though.

 

I just realized viewing the group photo that have personally met 6 of the people in that pic.(and the photographer I believe{Vickaroo})

for sure I have more gray on my sides than 3 years ago, plus more popping up in my beard now too :rolleyes:

 

no one drove on the grounds. we all came down the road, and pulled into that formation for some pics, then headed for the La Brea Mud Pits :lol:

Who's car is who's....I know some of them but not all. Dave, we finally get to see your tbrat, looks like its in good shape. Eyesore, nice paintjob on your wagon, the only pics I've seen was the primer ones...a friend of mine did his 85 nissan pickup in camo.

Oh man, that is some SERIOUSLY goopy SH%*!! I've run into mud like that before, it just builds up on your tire untill the wheels wells are stuffed full, then ALL the suspension gets full, and stuff starts breaking. That is definatly a situation where bald tires are the way to go, if the there is no tread to fill with mud, then you don't get the build up. WOW. Glad to hear everyone made it out ohkay.

Yeah, I had my 89 XT-6 5spd FT4WD, that I recently aquired. I thought somebody got a pic of it at the state park, but I don't see it anywhere. I didn't take it on the drive to the cemetary, as the whole family wanted to go and wouldn't all fit in the XT-6. Apparently nobody wanted a picture of my van...it's a 96 Chevy Astro, 2WD, 4.3 Vortec, 4sp auto.

While that mud does indeed look pretty nasty, I'm with Zap in thinking if either Mick or Tim had a welded diff to go with those MT's instead of an LSD, everyone would have made it out. Wouldn't have been pretty, but being flat like it is..... well, I haven't come across any mud that I can't plow through *unless* I get deep enough to suction the unibody down. Then your just SOL. The welded diff makes ALL the difference in the world for stuff like that. I did a hill climb the other day that Bugaru had to take three runs at WITH a welded rear end, and barely made it up. Slick as snot, and a good 1/8th-1/4 mile to the top. Had it been any wetter, I'm not sure either of us could have made it, and there's not a chance that any soob without a locker would have got to the top.

 

One of you should start carrying a boat anchor :lol: - no good winching from a moving platform.....

Both Mick & Tim's problems stemmed from trying to pull other people out. Mick was ultimately able to get out even with his damage, and Tim's clutch was a total loss. Otherwise, they were moving fairly well. Vickeroo got out just fine.

I never even got a chance to pull anybody. I got stuck turning around on the softer sides of the "road" and smoked my clutch pretty good. after letting it cool a bit, I got unstuck and made it back to the van where Tim had already hooked up and was starting to pull forwards towards the rest of the group. I didn't feel I had enough clutch left to try and turn around again, so I went back out the way we came in.

 

I have a replacement tranny at my house now (5 speed finally), so now I need to do something for the axles...

Just wondering, but did anyone air down? Or think to air down? When you get into sloopy stuff like that, and you need some traction in a hurry, flattening out the tire can make even the baldest tire grip pretty much anything. Prolly woulda sucked a little without an onboard air system among the group, but least woulda saved everyone a night out in the middle of nowhere.
