Carb's, Wheels and such.....

Recommended Posts

Hey Y'all,

New Member Here........Here's my plight... I recently had 2 sube's fall into my lap..

One is an 86 gl wagon 4 wd 5 spd, the other is an 87 Gl 3 door hatch 4 wd 5 spd.. Both are 1800 purely stock....

I need to know what wheels if any I can use to replace the narrow lil 13's that are on em... I perfer 15's... Or is there an adapter out there similar to the VW to Chevy lug pattern?

And I also need info on affordable Carb upgrades... all 4 of the carbs I do have, each have problem with the choke....The thing will idle great.. but you hit the gas and it die's... unless of course you pat the gas like you playing a bass drum..lol... whitch gets tiresome after the first mile or two...

I'm wanting to keep the hatchback for a daily driver...

But the wagon I could care less about... Its my "buggy" project...hahaha

Btw... anyone needing doors hatch or any other non-esential parts for a wagon are welcomed to ask... I'm basicly giving them away...

Thanks in advance for the help..

Great site..By far the best I've found yet

Wheels.. Peugeot 505 Steels and alloys.. not pretty, bit bigger than the stock 13s.. Bolt pattern is 4x140.. good luck finding anything aftermarket.

Carb. most common fix for carb problems in old soobs is to get a weber. Its about $350 for a brand new one with the adapter plate.

Do a search for those 2 things and you will find much more detailed info.

If you do put the larger wheels on, you'll have to do some wheel well mods.

Really?.. I wish you would have told me that before I put my pugs on a year ago..

You will only need to do fender/wheel well mods if you decide to go seriously oversized.

U can take 6 lug wheels for a Yota, Datsun/Nissan, Chevy, Isuzu, ect. ect. and drill 2 new holes in them and they fit! 2 of the Subaru studs line up with 2 of the 6 lug patern, and then U drill the other 2 holes.

The webber swap is the norm here on the USMB (2bbl progresive) but in my neck of the woods we are using all kinds of diferent carbs. From 1bbl's of of older Fords and Dodges, to Holley 500cfm 2bbl's. A big 1bbl is great for torque, and the 2bbl Holley (or a Motorcraft of of an older Ford V8) is great for HP in the uper RPM range ;)

You could also fix the choke on one of the ones you have. The Hitachi's aren't bad carbs really. Complex, but not bad once you get used to em. Drill out the rivets in the choke housing, and see if you can't figure out what's up inside there. There's a brass pin that keeps the housing from being adjusted, if you remove that you'll be able to adjust the choke and possibly stop your problems.

However - my gut feeling is that your problem is not the choke. All 4 carbs having the same problem seems unlikely. Sounds like maybe you need to replace your fuel filter.....

Yeah, 4 bad Hitatchi's isn't a likely scenerio. You might want to look at the EGR system, as that can give you choke-like symptoms. As GD said, the choke on the Hitatch IS servicible, if it's really the actual cause of your problems.

I've never tried drilling out wheels from other makes, but I don't see any problems in doing so. I am running Pug alloys on my 93 Loy, and would reccomend them, if you can find a set.

I might be interested in some of your extra parts. Where abouts are you in KY? I'm in the Columbus OH area.

Hey John... I'm in eastern Ky.. just south of ashland abt 25 - 30 mins...

Lemme know what ya need and I'll see what I got....I usually come to the col.. area every month or so to visit family.. so we may even be able to work out a delivery if your anywhere near Obetz..

And to every one else!... Thanks so much for the help and advice....I'm looking for a cheap repair to the carb problem... I have a used set of 40 mm webbers from a vw that I used to own...Dual 40's ohh yeah... But i can't find a manifold to fit a sube....guess i'm not looking in the right place....go figure!

as far as the wheel well's... My wagon dosen't have any...lmao... I removed them along with about a half ton of other non essential parts..

my daily driver is the one that i need to find a well fitting set for...

I'm not too wild about drilling holes as I've always been told that you can throw your wheels out of balance an mabey do some damage to the axle or even worse the diff...

That and I'm not the best mech. in the world either...Kinda a step below shade-tree ya know..lol

C'yall on the trails..

Shaggy:drunk:
