Fuel injection conversion?

Recommended Posts

I can't directly address a straigh-across swap because I've never done it. Hoxever, I am working on a megasquirt setup at the moment. The car is an 81 GL wagon. that's not overly difficult but it is a LOT of work.

I couldn't find an intake that was already plumbed for injection so I had one built out of sheet metal. It has bungs welded in just above each intake valve and two more at the top of the intake just below where the mass-air will sit. That was kinda spendy, but should be worth the money when I get everything put together.

Not too hard if you can get your hands on a donor car. I coulda helped you out a week ago, as I had most of a FI EA82 sitting in my drive, but it went away yesterday.

N.e. ways. You can go either way if you have an EA82, for TBI is pretty straight forward. Go to a u-pull it and get the whole intake off a TBI car, also get ALL the sensors off the motor, and the MAF. Then you will need mosto f the front wireing harness, and computer from under the steering column. Then it's just a matter of connect the dots from there. Cut all the other wires away from the ones from the computer to the engine. Connect all the inputs and outputs to the computer, supply power and grounds. Upgrade your fuel supply (there are a number of posts that hash, and rehash this, my way is add new supply, and use the old one for the return) A FI fuel tank will help out a lot, also you need an FI fuel pump (30-60psi running pressure on FI).

A list of inputs include the MAF, Knock sensor (not sure if all EA82's have the oriface for it or not), Engine Coolant Temp (in intake), distributor (also an output) and O2 sensor. You will also need to grab the coil bracket outa the donor car (has the ignition amplifier on it). Outputs include: the injector, dizzy, coil (ignition amp), Idle air controller. There might be more, but no less than these. Also get real intimate with reading wireing schematics, and picking up a book on Fuel injection theory helps out A LOT.

For MPFI, it's basically the same as above, except you WILL need the heads, along with the intake, the heads and intake are different (dual port).

Lots of luck to ya, and if you need any help, lemme know.
