What is the difference between a regular outback and a sport besides the hood? The reason I ask is I'm buying my mother in laws 99 for $2k ,only 80k miles!! It's really nice but I see a lot of Sports that don't look as nice, i.e. hubcaps instead of alloys. Any performance options, etc?

I must be because some say sport on the side and some don't. The ones that DO say sport have the scoop and the extra luevers on the hood the ones that DONT say sport have only the scoop and have a plain hood. Thats just what I've noticed anyway.

Not all impreza outbacks are outback sports. It is mainly just a trim level though. i.e. sporty hood (not functional :( ) and the spoilers on the back. the alloys are only an option on both models, only the WRX comes with them standard i think. I dont know if this changed over the years though.

Now dont quote me on this, but i think the OBS has some improved suspension, over the other impreza models, I know it does over the sedan (more wheel travel) but i really dont know about the standard outback. probably not. thats all i can think of. a good place to look would be the subaru website.

You might want to clarify what you mean by the difference between the Outback and the Sport.

Outback is commonly used to refer to the Legacy Wagon with the Outback Trim. Usually is has a 2.5l engine and is alot bigger since it is based on the Legacy model.

The Outback Sport or Sport is based on the Impreza model. Engine size would be the 2.2L engine.

In terms of difference between the OBW (Outback Wagon) vs. OBS the OBW has taller struts and is obviously larger.

In terms of Sport vs. other Imprezas. Sport has better stock suspension and it has alittle more ground clearance. My 2k OBS has the hood with the vents and the scoop and it also has the luggage rack.

Check out this site for more specific information

Hope that helps

the thread title does specify imprezza outback.

I guess what I'm really getting at is can I make a non sport perform like a sport by bolt-on?

The link only says sport wagon for everything, doesn't say just imprezza outback.

Thanx 4 the help...I'll keep lookin.

Yes a Impreza Wagon can perform just as well, if not better than a OBS

Look around for some RS or WRX guys who are selling their OEM stuff.

Wheels are a direct swap, look for someone trying to get rid of their pre 02 anti-sway bar from an RS, that will give you stiffer handling that a Stock OBS package. If you are not interested in the height difference between the two look for the struts and springs from an RS.

There are tons of companies out there that sell strut braces and other suspension handling components.

For $2k purchase price and even another 1k put into it you will have a car that can probably out perform a Stock OBS in handling :)
