weber help

I installed a weber on my 83 wagon today. After intalling it i tried to start it up. After a quick crank i started up and idled for about 4 sec. then it died. I tried to start it again and i wont fire up. I let it sit and tried it again. Once in a while it will pop once but thats as close as it comes to firing. Before installing the weber i put in a new fuel filter, coil, spark plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor, so i have pretty much eliminated those from the posible culpretes. If any one has any ideas why i wont start would help a lot.

i doubt it is the coil because the car would start up with the original hitachi carb on, and i can see/smell the gas in the carb after tring to start it up, it seems though that it floods really easy, the barels in the carb have gas pooled up in the bottom after just a few cranks, i'll try the starter fluid though. Also if any one has pics of their weber hooed up, id like to look at them to make sure i every thing installed correctly.

Thanks a lot i had the my fuel filter connected in correctly that was my problem. So the car starts now the the idel is surging, and the linkage seems i not return to its fully closed position. I can't find anything binding but it seems like the spring is just not pulling it closed. It also back fires every time i start it up. Also where do you pick up a lower clearence air filter because i dont have a lift (yet).

The throttle will not fully close until the choke has pulled off completely. You should also not do ANY adjustments to the carb until the choke is fully heated, and no longer engaged. You will need to rig your own return spring for the throttle as well if you haven't already done so. I just attach mine to the air filter housing, in front of the clip on that side.

 

The 1-7/8" air filter's are made by EMPI, and you should be able to grab one for about $10 at any VW performance shop.

 

Backfireing is likely due to improper timing, and incorrect idle mixture. Dieseling is generally caused by this as well. The timing and the idle mixture are insturmental in a properly tuned Weber setup. You'll just have to play around with it.

Thanks for all the help GD, its making me happy to almost have this car road worthy, I bought it in September and have been slowy getting it going. I need to hook up the returnspring, that should fix the that, the surging idel though is confusing though, my only guess is that it is vacume related. ill check for leaks. Other ideas though are still very helpful.
