well my girlfriend just pointed this out a lil while ago, i have no reverse lights on my 86 GL wagon, 5sp d/r

i swapped bulbs to no effect, is it the switch on the shifter/trans, or wiring??

Thanks,

Did you check the ground wire?

I would first check for the switch at the shift lever. If it isn't there, then check the tranny.

No switch on the shifter on a 5 speed.. its in the tranny... get a multimeter and a wiring diagram and get to work.
