EA82T - Boost but no power gain

so ive searched all I could on this and have gone over a lot of different possibilities of what it could be; new plugs, wires, cap, fuel pump, fuel filter, throttle position sensor, coolant temp sensor, and MAF sensor.

 

I haven't changed anything recently except for putting a new up-pipe to turbo to replace one with broken flange. it spools up just as fast but it seems like I'm not getting any power from the boost, almost like its bogging down.. if I floor it at 60 in 5th it slows down, but if I ease into it I barely have the same acceleration as my brother's weberized ea82

 

Im stumped here and can only hope its a mystery vacuum leak somewhere lol any suggestions??

Is the seal of the intake boot to the turbo good?

 

You could have an air leak before the turbo.....builds pressure....but pulling in the air from the leak rather than through the MAF......throws off the readings.......ECU doesn't deliver enough fuel for the given RPM/boost/load.

suggestions??- Measure the fuel pressure under boost conditions

 

What year we talkin?

Are you actually seeing boost pressure on a gauge?

Did it run better before the pipe swap?

 

Slowing down at 60mph after flooring the throttle sounds like the knock sensor is pulling timing back possibly because of low fuel pressure/poor fuel.

Ill have to find a way to measure fuel pressure, but just got new pump and filter a few k miles ago

 

Its an '87 1/2 GL turbo

 

And no boost gauge, but light comes on and I can really hear it spool up with open air box.. and it ran a little worse before because the flange to turbo was ripping off

man, you can measure boost direct at the inlet manifold take offs on my EA82T, but is not an 87.5. It is 85 modl and its boost light comes on at 2 psi.

 

as you found , could be a few things, blocked cat ? This only happened when you fitted another exhaust and that was the pipe from left, to righ to turbo ? They do differ in the size of the hole in the mounting flange from about 36 - 42 mm. My 87.5 that I am yet to try a boost gauge on - at the manifold - runs a 36mm which I am pleased about. The smaller the hole to a point, the lower the torquey boost comes in. I have also run a 42mm one where it seems to be slow coming , then a great rush all of a sudden and would spin way more freely to 6500.

 

Can you drop your broken orignal in to an exhaust shop to have them repair it and try it back on car ?

still trying to get a gauge to check manifold pressure....

 

I did think it looked bigger, but I didn't measure it.. will the bigger up-pipe ruin top end?? like accelerating from highway speeds?

 

there is quite a rush of air n power in my low end now, and it seems to drop power around 4500 rpm.. so I welded up my old up-pipe and i'm just gonna throw that back on and see if theres a difference... and knowing how turbos work I wouldn't think that a bigger header would take my top end away, so i'm gonna swap back and see how it runs

 

is there a way to check if that 3-way cat at the front is plugged? or just chop it up since I have another one on my not running RX

(exhaust is cut off at the first big cat that's on turbo)

Either one of two loose pipe clamps will cause this problem. All you need is ears in order to hear the high pressure air shooting out from under your hood. The two pipe clamps are both attached to the short rubber sections that attach to the bottom of your bright & shiny 4WD TURBO aluminum manifold on top of the engine. All you need is a phillips screwdriver to fix this problem. Essentially, you have a leaky/loose connection between the turbo and the intake manifold. It has happened to me when I forgot to secure these two clamps after working on the engine.

Did you say you've got a bigger up pipe now?

How much bigger?

 

Cos bigger diameter with the same flow volume = less flow speed, which means less speed pushing onto the turbo blades.

Tho if you haven't changed the turbo, then that hole will be the same size.

 

Just spitballing here, not really sure if this would have any effect or not :P

would a coolant temp sensor or something to do with warming up cause my problem?

 

i had to leave early this morning, so my engine was still kind of cold once i got to the highway. it seemed like it was running perfect, like accidentally doing 75 just cruising in 5th

 

but by the time i had gone about 5 miles and the temp gauge was at almost 1/3 i had same power loss, and in town while cruising at like 30 in 3rd it misses every once in a while

yeah i know!! i thought these little turbos only made like 8psi max boost. the boost seems to be more regulated to like 9-10psi now that i have a better exhaust gasket off of the turbo, but if im rallyin' off-road it'll make 12psi at 3k rpm in 1st and 2nd.. could the little bit higher boost off of the stock tuned everything cause problems? and i just have open exhaust off of the first big cat and my intake box is opened up

 

and yeah i just have the one good EA82T fer now.. do you mean the gas gauge problem post??

No, sorry. Im still doing the vacuum om my 87.1 RX the hard way

 

as of about 10 min ago i have 2'' exhaust from the bottom of cat and goes to a turn down just past the back tire, seems to run smoother now, just a little less bottom end power i think. and can really hear tha little turbo spool up hella quick now

 

it seemed to still run pretty good without any exhaust on after the cat, and the wastegate was still workin normally. with a 3'' tip on the cat I kept havin people in Chevys and big Deisels revving up at stop lights thinking i was wanting to race... lol and they thought they could beat me :D
