Engine Time, Part 2!! Help....*ITS ALIVE!!*

Recommended Posts

Ok...except for a cone on the air flow meter, and a gutted DP with no bottom on it (its shooting stright at the ground)...this 1986 engine is completely stock from the factory in turbo from. Well, ok, its got the XT A/C, PS, Alt, and other pullys...and it DOES use the ribbed v belts..(serpintine style)

Here is the deal...finally I got the engine in...it runs...idles at 500 rpm...will do NOTHING if the pedal is to the floor. The disty was 180 off, and it wouldnt fire at all...after what fixed...it fired. The dizy is MAXED out...running what should be 30+ deg BTDC...and it wont do anything but idle rough. I checked and at TDC, its where it should be on #1...past it some...and at 20 deg, its dead on #1. So...after some playing...taking the dizy hold down bolts out, and running the dizzy to where 50 deg should be, it idles better, and actually revs.

Since i had the garage doors closed to not piss of the neighbors (mid-high end place, houses close together, and its midnight here on the east cost), the fumes were kind of getting to me...so I turned it off and im going to call it a night....well...err, morning.

So...what doy uo guys think? One tooth off on the dizzy? Or something else? Coil wires bass ackward? Dizzy coil wires bass ackward? Vac leak?

Well, off to bed. Ya'll give me some really good ideas for in the morning...cuz I plan on driving it in about...oh say...9 hours.

tooth off on the disty. Ran into this same problem on my RX. Moved the disty a tooth and got it timed right. But there was no adjustment left. Car ran like bad still. So we kicked back another tooth (delta cams) and now am running about 25 degrees.

Good luck.

subiemech85: I was very careful about how long the engine ran...less than 1 min.

I'll move the dizzy in the morning...

Are there any off the wall things that could also be doing this mess....?

ok, after a test drive, everytihng but one tihng is fine....but there are little things too....like it was burning coolant its first minutes of life...its running 20-30 degs. too warm (rad? cap? t-stat? Me find out soon...) and some oil leaks (DANGIT!! I was planning in this engine not to leak a single drop!!!)....

The engine seemed to be better after being warmed up and driven some. I had gotten to wrong clutch set for he flywheel...the wrong step...so I figures with some shims, it woudl fix my clutch release problem. Yep, sho did. But massive clutch slip at any throttle position above 10%...so, with the engine still in...I am correcting that issue.

Ok, clutch slip fixed...no disengage correctly problem is back. Oh well.

Seems to run strong and I guess I'll drive it to work today...30 miles I-state+20 miles stop go, stop go...go go go...stop go driving. Then back 30+20.

Incase anyone is wondering...this is a bone stock like from the factory engine. Mods are:

Accel Coil

NGK Racing plugs

3 inch cone filter+MAF adapter bolted on the Air flow meter

Bottomless and gutted DP...otherwise, no exhaust system. LOUD

XT accessories/belt system

Thats it I think.

Hopefully...it will hold together longer than my last experimental engine...the RX...that lasted 4 days...was down for a week...then lasted 4 more days. I need this one to go to Sept, and go thru the 24 hours Autocross.

EDIT: 3,000TH POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On the vacuum advance connection: I haven't yet decided on that issue for N/A cars, but this is a TURBO. I don't know what would happen once it got on boost, but I can't imagine that it would be good.

Less advance as boost increases is the norm on other import turbo's. High advance and high boost together will cause detonation/pre-ignition and damage.

WJM, how much louder is the car after you gut the cat? my exhaust only has a cat and its kinda mild sounding...just wondering because when I build my turbo-back exhaust I am debating running only a cat or a cherry bomb also.

Its onyl got the Down pipe on it...and its cut before the bend at the bottom...so its about a 4-5 inch hole...with NO cat. LOUD LOUD LOUD.

Ive had a system with NO cats in it, stright pipe from the turbo back. its not loud. A little more than mild...
