manywhere Posted May 7, 2004 Share Posted May 7, 2004 I have a Legacy wagon '95, AWD and auto-transmission. The problem, or my irritation is that when accelerating (from standing still and D-gear in), the engine seems to gasp for air. It sounds like the engine first tries to rev up, realizes its mistake and pauses, with the result of the car "skipping" away -- i.e. not smoothly accelerating but jumping away in the acceleration. After the spiking acceleration, the car seems to perform normally and shifts relatively smoothly away. Furhtermore, if the car has been parked for some time, the skipping is more violent and annoying... :-\ The "problem" also occurs when I try to overtake another car. When I try to put the "pedal to the metal" (sort of ), it only revs too high up and kicks into a lower gear too late. This can be remedied by switching into gear 3 before, naturally, but it seems to always want more air still... I've seen and heard this phenomenon in another car and the solution was to change the air filter. So I supect the same applies to my Subaru, but this has been a factor more or less from the date of purchase of this car, so should I do the same on my Subaru? Or go after some performance air filters like K&N? The following maintence has been done: Oil change in engine and transmission Air filter changed (less than 6 months ago, FYI) While I'm at it, have you got some recommendations of what other performance tweaking I could do?
