RX Chassis+302/C6 combo and RWD.

Recommended Posts

Ok...project car...too manythings to fix and restore to make it road lagal and acutally fun to drive again...needs engine work inside and out, and parts to put back on the engine...cams and such, intake, ehaust, its got no turbo either. Parts from it are slated to go into the GL-10...the trans, flywheel/clutch set....and the front axles are destined for the Daily Driver RX....and the DD RX's are shot almost. Its also missing the instrument cluster, seats, ALL of the interior basically...the side skirts...and its ridding on the worse strut/spring combo ever. Worn the heck out XT's on the front...its almost rubbing the fenderwells, and the back is jacked way sky high with wagon rear springs and struts...and the tires are dryrotted and bald. No radiator either.

So....i can get a fuel injected Ford 302 engine...and trans...pretty much the whole car...FREE. Me need another car? NO. Not a Non-SUBARU at least. Im supposidly getting an XT turbo for free soon.

So...the chassis is light...and i can put front axle stubs in the front hubs...how abouts i drop the 302 with a C6 behind it in the car? RWD too...and its so light...striped out. Full cage...custom dash...ive got a racing seat that bolts to a cage...and I can get springs for cheap and ive got front struts if I part out the DL...imthinking GT40 heads and a holly 650 on the engine..and some sort of shift kit for the C6 and a floor shifter for it. Dual exhaust, nothing but glasspacks too. Shorty headers to go along with it.

hm...3.90 rear diff, and i'll use a set of the BFG's ive got laying around....and since i dont have to worry about front axles...I'll move the lower control arm out, bam, negative camber.

Ideas? Good? Bad? Rants/raves?

Let everything fly!

Your planning to run the stock rear diff? To put it simply, either it will :burnout: or the diff will go :dead:;) (wheres that explosion smiley when you need it)

I think it would be a fun project, but I personally wouldnt dump much money into it, because its only tricks are going to be eating tires, and eating gas, and eating diff stubs.

do it Will! I've been thinking about doing this for awhile but I would use a soild rear axle, with leaf springs(cause its simple) and I think that would be so cool (worthless on anything other than a drag strip but it would be fun) edit oh ya I would use a chevy engine/trans combo if I had a choice in the matter.

Well, when it comes doen the the American Redneck ways, im a ford man....so ford stuff all the way.

I want IRS...I'll beeffen up the rear stuff if it snaps stuff. If the Stock RX LSD wont be gettign snapped either...its going in the GL-10.

I don't think the rear end in that fragile.

Some of those 510's that get this rear are strong.

I'm talkin turbocharged, intercooled, newer JDM, roarting, snorting stuff.

Lots of letters and numbers in the designation.

Maybe they break the diffs too? Mavbe the people doing this convert the diffs into snorting stuff too. stubs different?

More info needed.

Who has broken one?

People put 302's into Miatas.

Saturday night,

Jay

Well this Is what I would do different. Instead of a C6 I would go with a C4, the are smaller, lighter, and can be built to handle that much horsepower. For the rear diff, replace the R160 with a R200 from a 300ZX. You might blow one of them up but it would be an instant meltdown like it would be with a R160. Also don't be surprised if you end up twisting the Unibody even if you welded a ton of steel to the existing chasis.

see it would be fun

and even Doc RX agrees with me about the Chevy thing ;)

The R160s I've heard will take upwards of 300 HP.. As long as you don't change your coefficient of drag you will be okay (i.e., don't expect to put a set of Hoosiers on the back, or a load of wood in the back, and expect the diff to live)..

Also, if that is a 302 with a C6, it would be a small block c6, which are hard to find, and you could sell that motor and trans off for quite a bit, adn get a 13B Turbo to stuf in there (At least keep it Japanese!)

Go for it!!!!!!

The rare C6 bit is true, I would trade some one for a C4 (smaller, lighter, eazyer to fit in the trans tunnel). And an R180 or R200 in back would make it reliable too ;) It will work with the R160 for now, but if U end up likein' it U could up grade to the R200.

It might hold together up to 300 hp, but a 302 with gt 40 heads is gonna make a whole lot more bottom end torque than any Sube engine.Torque moves mass, and torque breaks diffs.Go solid rear, maybe an 8 inch out of a falcon or fairmont.Just my 2 cents(you sure don't get much for 2 cents:grin: )

after a few more seconds of thought....the idea is scrapped.

And I wish that GM would have never had any involvement what so ever with SUBARU. Or Ford is not GM. Or Dodge if not GM or Ford...EVER.

My opinion? Either flat six the beast, or use a 4.3 GM V6 or a 3.8SC out of a Thunderchicken :-) (I've always wanted to put one of those motors in a Taurus wagon, and see how many people I could piss off before the tranny blew :brow: )

I'd say get the Ford motor and stuff, and just sell it off.. or demo derby :-)

Little late for this, but I'll throw in my .02 anyways.

Thinking it would have been way heavy on the front-end. Of course, you could go with stiffer spring rate. Power steering would have been a must too.

The 302/351W block, C-6 trannies were used alot in the vans of the mid-70's era, also some of the pick-up trucks.

I'd vote for the EJ22T from an early 90s Legacy Turbo. Several people have gone the EJ20 (WRX motor) route, so you'd have some existing knowledge available to work from (most of the EJ-turbo engines are practically the same from the outside, so whatever makes an EJ20 fit should make the EJ22T fit as well), but you'd get better torque and driveability with the 2.2L! :D
