Hey guys I just bought a 97 Subaru at an auction knowing that it was from out of California. The car was originally from Nebraska where smog regulations don't exist. And it has an EJ22 which has a flang for a EGR on the intake manifold but has no egr components and i have no idea how to install the egr and all the valves, tubes, ...etc and need to pass smog any tips on how to go about this. I recently went to the junk yard and found a 96 outback with same EJ22 and everything so I took the EGR valve and all other tubes, pipes and regulators with it. This is before knowing i had no EGR. My smog failed. THE HYDROCARBONS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE UNDER 100 MINE IS AT 500 AND MY (CO) IS SUPPOSED TO BE AT 1.00 AND ITS AT 8.0. I'm not familiar with smogs and what would cause high readings. So if anyone could give me some help I would appreciate it.

You should not need to add EGR to make the car pass.

To do so you'd need the whole intake manifold, and the drivers side head...........Or you would need to drill and tap your head, and the intake manifold (maybe....don't know if the passages are actually there or just "blank")

EGR is for controlling NOx anyhow.......CO I would change plugs, run a few tanks of premium, change fuel and air filter, and an oil change.  Unless they say you MUST install an EGR....I would focus on other areas of making the car run right.

So here's my dilemma. My intake manifold does have the flange where you put the EGR but the bottom block does have a hole down where the EGR return pipe connects. But like you said I would have to tap and drill the head because the whole is there but not drilled or tapped. And it wasn't my NOX they didn't measure that just the HC and Co.

That's precisely his point.  If EGR controls NOX...then it can't possibly be the cause of your HC and Co failing.

Pretty sure you'll find swapping a non-EGR vehicle to EGR challenging and not as simple as you'd hope.

OK that would make sense as to why they didn't test for NOX. But the sparkplus were not fouled or anything just a little gray that's it. My oil was fine and I did run premium fuel. But I no longer need to worry about getting smog cuz some old lady side swipped into the front of my car and my car is considered a total loss. So.....
