A ton of shifter slop. '95 Legacy 5spd.

So i picked up this wagon and the 5spd has a rediculous amount of slop in it. Today i pulled the shifter boot expecting to see a couple mangled shifter bushings, only to find everything in real good condition.

 

Is the slop going to be internal or is there something else I can check?

I don't own a legacy, but on my 06 impreza a lion's share of the slop was remedied when i changed the front and rear shifter linkage bushings to poly under the car -- you wouldn't be able to see them from the top, I do not think.

The slop comes from the u-joint kinda thing on the transmission end of the linkage. Scoobymods used to have a thread with a write-up on replacing the joint on newer Impreza.

The legacy joint is similar but on the older ones it has bolts instead of rivets so you could replace just the bushings for about $3 each.

What Fairtax said--it's definitely the bushings in the "boss joint" (the u-joint thingy) that connects the shifter rod to the tranny input.

 

Been a lot of discussion of the job over the years.  Try a "search"--go to advanced search, enter shifter bushings and choose New Gen Forum.

Finally tracked down some info!  It's all bits-and-pieces from years ago but I hope it helps you.

 

Back when I did mine, one of my best resources was the exploded view drawing in the Haynes Manual, page 7A-2.

Slightly OT, but I'm going to ask a small favor. In Jan 2013, on my wedding night, I had a 95 Legacy wagon stolen from the hotel room parking lot. It also had a 5 speed with a lot of slop in it. The vehicle was never recovered.

 

I know it's very unlikely that it's the same car, but I'm from the Portland, OR area, and I was wondering if it might have made it down to where you are. If you just purchased it, did you do any kind of carfax or something like that to see if the VIN came up stolen?

 

Mine was dark red. I proposed to my wife on the beach in that car. I still hold out faint hope it will come back.

Thanks a million!!  That nasioc thread is exactly what I needed.   Ive been reading that there are several different changes made to this part across model years, so I am hoping a guide like this will help me track down the correct parts.

 

I forgot SubyLuvr changed his name...  that explains why nothing came up.   

 

gdudik, i did not run a carfax or anything, but my car is white, has no ABS and rear drum brakes but power windows... and a salvage title.   Don't think its going to end up being your stolen sube.   Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

You're welcome.  I was tickled I could find all that stuff again too!

 

One bright spot--my car is also a '95 Legacy and it has the simplest boss joint.  It's held together with nuts & bolts, so access to the bushings is pretty simple.

So I was speaking to a friend of mine who has done this before, and he said on his trans he just removed the bolt holding the u-Joint to the transmission side...  instead of removing the double spring pin & "Y" piece.   I might try this method as it sounds a lot easier than removing 2 roll pins.

its a little out of my budget at the moment, and im not even sure it will work.  Im sure i have a centering spring on mine, i will know more when I get under the car and take it out.   Im sure all I need are new bushings, and don't feel like emptying my wallet... besides, im still not sure exactly which bushings will work in my '95, i have not found any definitive information on the differences between models and years.   But im going to continue searching.

That's exciting that TurnInConcepts has bushings for the "boss joint."  They didn't offer them back when I did mine.  And no one has ever been happy with the longevity of the Subaru OEM bushings!

 

No idea why their boss joint unit is only for "springless" models. You might try contacting them and asking.  I dealt with Clint, one of the owners of TiC and a Subaru guy himself--really nice guy.

 

If they sell just the bushings I think it'd be a good investment.

 

As for removing just the bolt holding the joint--good luck!  As I remember there's no way to get a wrench up in there.  I wish you success and if you accomplish it, by all means let us know how!
