99 OBW fuel filler tube, replacement won't fit

Recommended Posts

I did a lot of research at various auto parts stores on line to buy a replacement fuel filler tube for my 99 OBW. I ordered what was suppose to fit a 97, 98, and 99 OBW. I had my doubts that I may not be getting the correct part, though all parts stores said a certain part number was correct. Well, tonight I attempted to install the part, only to learn that it is not the correct part. Anyone out their in Subie land have this problem in the past. If so, what is the correct part? I am going to check to see if a 2000 OBW filler tube will fit.

Thanks for any help.

unless the 99 has a specific part as mentioned above...maybe it's just not lining up right?

i just installed one in a 1996 EJ25 Legacy and it was aftermarket.  i was almost sure it was the wrong part, but once i got everything lined up it did indeed fit.  there are very tight tolerances with the hoses, and it being tucked so tight to the body, the way it fits into the fuel filler area, etc.  one millimeter off up top equals an inch down below so to speak.

i would call/stop in and ask Subaru via VIN number what your part number is and cross reference that to 1998's to see what Subaru says.  though that still may not be definitive.

Does it differ in shape from the original?

They can be a pain to get lined up when installing.

Does it have the valve thing at the top, or does it have the small metal tube? That's the biggest difference I know of.

It has the valve thing at the top, not with the smaller metal tube. The wrong one I bought has the smaller metal vent tube that hangs down the side of the fill pipe, with no valve unit at the top. I researched some more at various on-line parts stores to see that Dorman brand part # 577-086 looks like the correct part. On some websites, it says this part fits only 2.2 motors, others say it fits some with 2.5 motors also. I have the 2.5 motor in my 99 OBW. I will prolly gamble and order the 577-086 through Advance Auto Parts. If it doesn't fit, it is not a hassle to return, like it would be if trying to return to Parts Geek.

Thanks for all the advise.

use the P30 or better discount codes and you can get 30 - 40% off at Advance Auto Parts, makes buying online not worth it often times for me.

Yea, thank grossgary. I regularily buy from Advance Auto, and always find a good coupon to apply to the purchase. For those who don't know how to do this, Google "Advance Auto Parts Coupons," and a series of coupon codes will appear. It is well worth the effort to search out a coupon.

I've done exactly that for years. And many times I've added a single spark plug or a small pack of brake grease ($1.99ish) or such to an order to get above a certain amount to save another $10 or more with discount codes.

Yep, I have done the same thing, just added a few oil filters, or what ever, to meet discount code dollar levels, or to get free shipping. Advance has the best on-line coupon discounts of any on line parts house.

I once bought a car battery from them on line, found a coupon for 40% off, then went down to the Advance store, and picked it up. Crazy how you can save 40% using a coupon with them.

Final update..............installed a replacement filler pipe neck to gas tank of my 99 OBW. I encountered confusion on buying the correct part on line. What's listed to fit a 96-99 OBW did not fit my car. What did fit, was the part made to fit the 2.2 motor, but I have the 2.5 motor. Seems there are number of changes for the 99 model, that were different from the 98 model, though both cars look the same. Go figure?????????

I checked my receipt files. I have both a 98 and 99 Outbacks. I could only find one receipt, but not sure which receipt was for what car. I did buy the Dorman brand, and the product was good. Only thing.......when putting on the gas cap, I have learned not to tighten until it clicks. To do so, then requires pliers to remove the cap. So, now I just tighen up the cap until it feels tight before it clicks.

I looked up info on the Dorman brand part # 577-086. I can't remember from looking at it, if it is the one I used. As I posted earlier, the one that fit my car was the one that was designed for the 2.2 motor, even though I have the 2.5 motor.

About the only way to know in advance for your car, is to pull off your road wheel on right rear, then look at the filler tube, or even take pictures of the filler tube. You may even have to remove the plastic shield to get a good look at the filler tube. Compare what you see with pics of the filler tube designed for the 2.2 and 2.5 motors to find the one that fits your car. The fill pipes are very different because of vacuum hose attachments. The '99 model year Subies was a transition year. Seems like they cleaned out the parts bin with old style parts lying around, and also added new style parts on some cars that became standard on the 2000 model. So, who knows what you got.

Hey thanks alot! I did take some pics the other day and man was it filthy under there. I did punch in the 2.2 motor when looking at filler necks and I am 99% sure I have the one like the Dorman # 577-086. And of course I can't upload more 2MB pic size  :banghead:   Anyway yeah it looks like it!

Alright guys, instead of waiting forever for the spectra brand I tried asking around to different parts stores. So while I happened to be on Amazon there was a suggestion/recomendation for the Subaru brand valve. It was 20 bucks more but I would get it in a few days and not have to wait a month and a half lol. So no I'm waiting for some warmer weather and gotta get a few more little things, hose clamps, nuts to hold the valve to the filler neck, maybe new rubber hoses.

So I have this guy: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3DSYTI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 it's perfect!

And the filler neck: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=3522396&cc=1357354
