Gen 1 BRAT Lighting Issue

Recommended Posts

I have a 1980 Brat and the lights have stopped working.   I spent my Sunday trying to track down the issue, but could not locate the issue.

Driver's Side Fues Box:

All the fuses are good.  Here is the order of fuses in my block starting at the top.

1.  Brights

2.  Headlights

3. Running lights / markers, and tail lights.

The bottom fuse in the block is the main line in from the battery.   It has a strong 12.3V going across the fuse, so there is a good connection from the battery to this point in the wiring harness.   Also, with a spare piece of wire, I can jump power from the main fuse to the corresponding fuse for Brights, Headlights, Tails / Markers and get all three to turn on.   That means that the connection from fuse box to the end point of the lights is also good.

This means that the issues seems to be with the connection from the main fuse to the switch and back to the corresponding fuse for each light.  Thinking the issue might be the switch, I took it out and measured the voltage at the switch, and I was only getting around 4V.  This doesn't seem quite right.  To eliminate the switch all together I plugged wires in to complete the circuit and I am still getting 0V at each light fuse.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of what to check next.  Or if anyone had a wiring diagram for a GEN1 Subaru.

Hi,

Do the 'brights' work from the stalk?  (like when you flash someone)

Check the big round plugs that go into the back of the dash.  I have had intermittent problems with these connections before that have affected my lights.

I do have wiring diagrams.  If you are really stuck let me know and I will scan them and post.

Cheers

Dirk
