considering purchase of 2002 Legacy Wagon

Recommended Posts

Hello Subaru Fans!  After a 17 year hiatus, I am considering once again becoming a Subaru owner.  My last Subie was a 1986 4wd GL wagon, 5 spd d/r.  It was a great car!  I am currently looking at a 2002 Legacy Wagon.  This one is not an Outback.  Its a 5 speed with a sunroof, fog lights, cloth interior, cruise.  Body looks straight. 99k miles.  Price is $2500.  The guy has only had it for a year and doesn't know the history.  I have read the FAQ, but am wondering if there is anything in particular that I should be wary of.  Also, would this car have the 2.5?  Im wondering if it is possible to add heated seats as well.

Thank you!

Welcome back, Jack!  Hey, that car looks nice.  Yes, it would be a 2.5.  I think heated seats are possible--try a "search," I'm sure it's been talked about.  At 99k it's due for a timing belt soon--a few hundred dollars in parts.  Price sounds good, but you might want to factor in the timing belt, tune-up etc.  Good luck!

You're welcome, sir!  Unfortunately there's no such thing as "time for new head gaskets."  They decide when they want to be changed--and they'll let you know in the most unpleasant ways!!!  Hopefully others with more knowledge will chime in here (I never went beyond the good ol' EJ22.)  All the very best with the car.

likely overdue for a timing belt, 'technically'  -  105K miles OR 105 months.

you could have a mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection (which must include checking for torque bind). ask him to let your know what needs to be done NOW, what you need to save-up for, and anything you could live with (squeaks, rattles, slow drips, etc.)
