2001 Impreza Wagon - Fog Lamp Wiring

Hi all,

 

This is my first post. I did a few searches, but didn't find exactly what I was looking for, so I thought I'd ask.

 

I picked up some fog lamps from a junkyard off of a 2001 Impreza Outback. My Impreza L Wagon seems to be prewired for the fog lamps, and had both the point under the bonnet to attach the lamps, as well as for the on/off switch inside the cabin. There was a fuse marked "fog" (not blown).

 

I put everything on the wiring and hit the switch, but didn't get any light. My next step is to take a multimeter down and verify that I've got power to the harness.

 

I am curious though, has anybody else done this successfully? Any pointers?

Headlamps have to be ON on Low beam for the fog lamps to work with the factory wiring.

 

Check for power and ground at the lamps. If you find the relay check for 12V reaching the connector. If you don't have 12v there follow the wiring from that to the fuse box, or see if the "fog" fuse has continuity to the relay connector.

The harness wiring in the dash is tricky, the relay grounds through the headlamp circuit. You may see 12v on the ground side when the key is On.

Thank you for the replies. Helpful so far, but I haven't solved the problem.

 

First, I tested the switch itself. I got 12v of power to the switch. I tested the switch's integrity and it was also fine.

 

Next, I checked the integrity of the ground wire at the fog lamp with the meter by touching one tip to the negative and the other to the body - again, ground was ok. At the same time, I checked the postive terminal for voltage, again - same as last time - no power.

 

Third, I pulled the fuse out and cleaned the blades. Popped it back in, no joy. I put a brand new fuse in, also negative results.

 

It seems that somewhere between the switch and the wiring harness hookup there's a loss of integrity. unforunately, I don't have enough slack on the multimeter to check circuit integrity back to the switch.

 

Hopefully someone has another suggestion for me. I'm going to start looking at wiring diagrams next.

The switch does not directly power the lamps. The switch merely activates the fog lamp relay under the dash.

The relay controls the power to the lamps. Do you hear the relay click when the switch is pushed?

 

Need to find the relay and check for power there. Its kind of a goofy looking round relay.

Ah, I understand. I didn't see the relay nor did I hear the click, perhaps it's not there due to this being an L model. I'll see if I can locate where it should be and find a relay either at a store here in the city or online.

 

This looks like my setup - I am certain that relay is not there. I'll attempt to find one at the autoparts store in a bit and report back. I bet dollars to donuts that fixes everything.

So the relay was not there at all?

 

Correct. Just an empty pink socket above the fuses. This car didn't come with the fogs from the factory. I got all the parts from a 99 Imreza Outback. I just didn't realize I was missing stuff like the relay. I'm trying to find the bezels now, which I can be patient on.
