xpsychox Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 Looking at possibly getting an 05 forester with 195k miles. I know I'll need a mechanic to take a look at it.. Its in to me to oh.. Anyone recommend a good mechanic that could look at it to make sure its sound. (Prefer a subaru cert.) Body looks good but looks can b deceiving.. It's also at a dealer. 1 Lucky Texan Posted September 22, 2014 Share Posted September 22, 2014 just looking around Google, good reviews for both MYTEE and Toledo Auto Repair you could call them and ask how much a pre-purchase inspection for that car would cost, and what major items would be included. (you expect they will look at fluids and tires, etc.) then decide if it's worth the hassle. better if someone from around there can recommend a shop. Those are two subaru/engine specific issues. Very odd for a Subaru dealer to sell a 195,000 vehicle that old? They usually only sell things $15k+ and under 60,000 miles. Like someone said turbo might have an issue and will probably need a new timing belt VERY soon.. I've decided to wait. I'm working on a home loan first then will go back to vehicle find.. idosubaru Posted September 24, 2014 Share Posted September 24, 2014 (edited) at that mileage it also needs a complete timing belt kit. they're $115 for Gates kits on amazon, great deal. i install them on any new-to-me or friend/family vehicle that's expected to last awhile. turbo, it has a turbo? Foresters don't have turbo's. Forester XT's have turbos. a 200,000 mile Subaru turbo with unknown maintenance records, unverified synthetic oil changes is a scary purchase. that might explain why it's on the lot, they're hard to find...still crazy miles and old for a dealer but that would make more sense than a base forester. I've owned a 79 Chevy and an 99 Isuzu amigo never ran sy thetic...was always told not needed.. that chevy and isuzu engine were not forced induction. the newer Subaru turbo engines have significant issues if they aren't run with synthetic. there are banjo bolt screens that clog up and other issues. There can be very fine lines between a great engine and catastrophic engine failure on these motors. And they are insanely expensive....relative to other Subaru engines. $3,000 - $8,000 to repair or replace, and the turbo itself is a grand...costs can escalate quickly. not a fun experience for the average buyer who spends most of what they wanted on the purchase of a vehicle to begin with. all that added power doesn't come for free - it stresses components, creates more failures points, and the heat and compression being generated allow fast escalation from minor issue to catastrophe. you can limp a non-turbo engine around often times wihtout issue. not a good idea on turbo engines. a minor miss could be your turbo puking it's insides into the engine block. you can google it - turbo engine failure is common and easy to find examples of http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/turbo-failure-wiki-173358.html Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Since I'm waiting I know I'll probably miss the 05 forester xt.. So I'm probably going after what I really want an 08ish impreza wrx hatchback...I think it looks great.. I saw a post that its recommended to ngk plugs (always do except on my Chevy) and now I know to synthetic..any specific brand?
