96 legacy outback rear elec hum noise

Recommended Posts

Howdy, I have a 96 legacy outback with 2.2L and 5 spd. I've been hearing this electrical humming noise coming from the rear of the car, and then the other night while driving up the hill home, the car just sputtered a little and died instantly. I tried recranking it w/o success, so I towed it home and thought maybe the timing belt went out. I took out the radiator and checked the timing belt and it was fine. So Im a little stumped as to what the problem is. Is there a fuel pump in the gas tank that could potentially fail? Any thoughts or help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cheers

Gas pump under the rear cargo cover front section right side.  there is a cover with 4 screws.  I'd grab a used subaru pump over a new aftermarket.

You can confirm it's a lack of gas by putting a 1/4 cup of gas in the intake and starting it.
