94 EJ22 into a 2000 Forester

So, one of our customers at the shop I work at is looking to sell their 2000 Forester.  It's a pretty good price, but the engine is seized.  I'm probably gonna get it, but I'm trying to get a handle on what my options are for the engine.  I have a 94 EJ22 in my 87 GL right now.  I'm guessing I would need to use the Forester's intake manifold, but would it work with the block off the 2.2?  Would I need to do anything else to get it to work?  I'm working on searching for it, but there is a lot to sift through.  The intake and exhaust manifold gaskets are the same part number between the two motors, so I'm thinking they should bolt up.

Thanks!

If you have a 1994 EJ22 swapped into an 87 GL - then that means it was an entire wiring/ECU job - just do the same thing to the forester - swap the entire wiring/ECU into the forester just like was done to the 87 GL.

The 2000 Forester is a Phase II EJ25.

The intake manifold most definitely will not bolt up to the 1994 EJ22.

2000 Forester intake manifold will only bolt up to 1999-2001 EJ22's.

1. you could swap the 2000 wiring harness onto the 94 intake manifold.  but there are going to be differences, namely the idle controller set up is completely different and it'll idle/warm up funny and require some ghetto rigging to get it to idle properly...and fluttering the gas pedal at stops...etc.  i'm also unfamiliar with 1994's - 1995+ EJ22's that holds, i'm not sure what other differences, how similar injectors are, etc for 1994's which are OBDI and not OBDII.

2.  you could swap the 2000 forester heads onto the 94 block and then your intake manifold, electronics, idle control, all stays identical.  you'll take a compression hit but it'll run.  the risk you take when doing that, and i've been in the same general position - do you trust the heads on an engine that was compromised?

Thinking probably that won't work at least if it's an automatic trans, at least if having the CEL/MIL on is an issue such as for passing inspection if necessary. I would think you'd have to stay with the 2000 ECU to work with the TCU for that trans, since it would be the phase II 4EAT whereas the '94 would have had a phase I. But then I think the 2000 Forester would have had the speed density based calculated air flow (at least the 2000 Outback 2.5L was like that) whereas the '94 would have been MAF based. Also the '94 probably had the emissions canister under the hood rather than under the rear.

It can be done.

Swap the wiring and throttle body from the 2.5 onto the 2.2 intake.

Things to address.....

Injector connectors......these will need cut/spiced 2.2 connector onto 2.5 harness

IAC port on 2.2 intake will need block off.

IAC hole in 2.5 throttle body will also need blocked.  A thin plate of metal between the TB and the intake works. Use 2.5 TB for template.

EGR hole in head will need plugged.

You will have CEL and no cold warmup...so you;ll need a brick for the pedal on cold mornings.......
