My Maxima Alternator Swap with Pictures

Recommended Posts

1996 Nissan Maxima Alternator 125 amp from junkyard in Portland $25 + 7 core.

Pulley is from 1965 chevy alternator "externally regulated".

Adapter pigtail used to allow for easy swap back should it fail.

"Custom Bracket extension" necessary for install.

How much of a PITA was it to extract the alt out of the donor car?

I briefly looked at one in the JY and it looked to be under a number of the other components.

All can be explained here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/97208-bolt-in-ea-series-alternator-upgrade-nissan-maxima-alt-installation-guide/. Super easy and well worth it swap.

NIce work and thanks for posting the photos.  Yes nice and clean engine - very nice! Did you do that because the stock alternators are no longer available, price, or to have better AMPS for offroad lights, winch, etc?  Thanks

Stock alts are still available, but close enough in price to be worth just swapping one on, and yes more amps to run stereo, lights, and winches. With normal use it makes it so the lights don't dim when using turn signals or have your stereo on since you have a few extra amps to handle it.

Why is there a need to swap the pulley?

What comes stock?

Because the stock pulley is setup for a regular v-belt while a maxima's is iirr a 5 rib belt.
