Welcome! 96 legacy will fit just fine. The two possible differences are

#1. Exhaust manifold on the legacy may be single port (96 was the year they changed) in which case just swap the y pipe with the motor.

#2. Final drive ratio of the transmission may be different - in which case you swap the rear differential from the legacy as well. Search the transmission code of both the impreza and the legacy to see. (Sticker just in front of the starter) 3.90, 4.11 and 4.44 I think are the options for the 4EAT. if the same, they will interchange 100%. If different the trans and rear differential need to be moved as a det or your transmission will get in a fight with your differential and bad things will happen.

284,000 and running strong but reverse just up and quit about 3 weeks ago

you can swap in ANY auto trans 95 - 98 from an ej22 car.
plus ANY auto trans  93 - 97 from an ej18 car.

this means you can use any impreza, 93 - 97,
or any  NON-ej25 legacy 95 - 98.

tons to choose from

search
www.car-part.com
sort by zip code to see what is close.
you will have to search each year and model separately.

Knowing there are many cars to choose from due to being able to use other model years I would get a good used one just my opinion but thanks to the helpful people on this site I had the info to find a good donor and I did. Otherwise it would be awesome to put a 5 speed in it and a turbo but its my daughters car and she would be mad.

Is that tube still clipped to the trans? I had this issue recently. the torque converter came out and seperated from the long tube insert thingy (I don't know what they call it.) Basically, there's a metal tube that clips on the back of the torque converter. You need the TC, the tube and the little clip (Wherever it landed. Searched 10 minutes through leaves on the last one.

once it's clipped to the TC, slide it onto the shaft. Hold the  TC level by the nub that sticks out of the center. Rotate clockwise while gently pushing it back to the trans. There are 3 seperate little clunks as it goes in. Once seated you should have only about 1/8 of an inch between the bellhousing and the back of the TC. You can look through the starter hole. 1/8 of an inch is seated. 1/4 inch is not. When the engine is installed, the flexplate bolts will pull the TC forward a bit.

i know every body has been busy for the holidays and many thanks for all the help you have given me i was able to figure out the speedo and fixed that and motor and trans are in and every thing is hooked up but the car wont start and this was a running car before pulling motor and donor car was running and driving as well im positive all connections are hooked. quick back ground good car is a 95 impreza 2.2l with actual speedo cable and donor car is a 96 legacy wagon with electrical connection at speedo pickup i mention this because maybe there are wiresi need to hook up differently or parts i need to interchange from one motor to another im not aware of.im pretty sure it is electrical because i here the fuel pump running and i put a bit of gas down the throttle body after repeated starting attempts and more attempts after gas down throttle body that it should have made it to the cylinders as well negative on battery was disconnected whole time car was apart just over a week mentioned this incase a computer needs to reset im not aware of. i hope i have given enough info for someone to help me again and thanks in advance for your help.
