Hi! New guy with a timing belt question

Hi all. I'm Matt. I'm a Volvo addict. 

But I need AWD in winter and I don't care for newer Volvos, so I drive a '92 Legacy wagon.

 

My wife and I are planning a trip in about a month, and not knowing maintenance history on this car, I'm thinking it'd be a good idea to do a timing belt/water pump kit before we go. 

 

Normally, not a part I'd skimp on, but OEM seems awful expensive. I can get aftermarket for about $150 (Rockauto), and it seems the sky is the limit.

 

Any recommendations on brands for this specific kit? Or more importantly, brands to absolutely avoid?

I would recommend finding a kit with a replacement water pump, tensioner, and idlers. Its a fairly easy job to do. I'm assuming the car is a 2.2L? I just did one on a 97 2.2 a little over a week ago. I used a Dayco kit. The dayco kit was nice as it had timing marks on the belt itself, which is something the OEM does NOT have.

Gates is a well respected brand for these cars. Ebay, Amazon and roackauto all have similar prices. And x2 on the water pump. It's about $30. more and only a little extra time invested.

 

If you weren't already aware - your motor in non interference so no risk in doing yourself. Easy job takes about 2 hours if you've worked on cars before but first time doing the job. There's a really good photo/writeup I can share if you'd like.

Gates has good kits. I think amazon had the cheapest price on the gates kit.

 

eBay has some decent kits as well. I like the MizumoAuto kits with the Aisin water pump. It comes with an OE style rubber coated metal gasket. You get all of the front oil seals with the kit as well.

 

Whatever you get make sure it has the new tensioner pulley, all 3 idlers, and the water pump.

Thanks! I'd love to see any photo/writeup you know of. I'm an experienced shade tree guy, and the job doesn't scare me in the least, but good to have any and all info going in...

This writeup got me through my first 2 timing jobs before I could do it by memory. It's as easy as it looks. The crank pulley can be stubborn but starter bump method works just fine.

 

I know there are a few good youtube videos on the subject as well. I think MilesFox has one somewhere for the 2.2

If you do the timing belt,, Get an oil pump rebuild kit and do that too.  Which might require a  crank seal as well,, .

 

He will want to replace the crank seal.

 

But the Oil pump does not need a "rebuild" kit.

 

The pump has one o-ring that seals it at the rear.....and unless it's leaking between the block and pump no reason to take it off.

definitely do the cam and crank seals while in there. most of the "kits" will have the seals included.

 

an added tip for replacing the seals - break the cam bolts loose BEFORE pulling the timing belt/tensioner off.

 

I have used the MizumoAuto kits from ebay many times with no issues, on my 90 wagon (x2), on the other half's 90 sedan, and on my 95 wagon...all with the same motor you have.
