Back in 99 when I went to college my mom gave my '84 GL(2 door hatch) to my grandpa who then put cardboard in front of the radiator because it had no heater. subsequently it over heated died and had not been touched in 5 years. So now I have two project cars that I am messing with and am thinking about the subaru to drive daily. So... I do not trust that old engine and want to replace it. Where can I get a new or used engine? Who can I go to for work done to it?(I'm from north seattle BTW) Any other info about the GL hatch back would be awesome Thanks! Hondasucks Posted May 19, 2004 Share Posted May 19, 2004 You should be able to slap some new heads on it (if they are cracked) and a set of head gaskets and drive it.. I had an 84 wagon with 343,000 miles on it that sat for 3 years with water in the crankcase from a blown head gasket. Replaced the H/G and the head, and it ran like a TOP.. If it has low miles on it, it could be worth repairing, not replacing. Wrench Princess Posted May 19, 2004 Share Posted May 19, 2004 You can try Pull A Part in Lynwood (or the one in Everett if there is nothing at the Lynwood yard). I have helped pull motors from there several times. The worst part about it though is that you can't use a jack or a hoist so you have to have at least one other person with you to help you lift the motor out of the car. According to the Pull A Part price list, a longblock will run you $124.50 with a $5.50 core charge. Me and my boyfriend are going to Pull A Part (or PAP as people on the board call it) tomorrow to get parts for a friend's van. I hope that I helped some. Oh yeah, and there are a ton of us from the Seattle area so if you have any other questions or need help working on your Subaru, just let us all know and someone will probably be willing to help. Cougar Posted May 19, 2004 Share Posted May 19, 2004 Welcome to the club Lucas. Another place near you is Carter Subaru in Lynnwood. I puchased my first new car from them. It was a '83 GL-10 wagon. Had it 11 years. Worst problem I had with it was the water pump and intake manifold gaskets failed. I think I spent about $200 on replacement parts for that car. It was the cheapest car to maintain that I ever owned. Only had one compaint---it was gutless, only about 85HP. If you want a real reliable rebuilt engine check with the folks at CCR, they are tops at rebuilding these engines. If the body is in good shape it may be worth the investment of one of their engines.
