1979 Brat clutch pedal hinge worn out

Recommended Posts

First time posting on here so I'll do my best to explain what's going on...

As the title says my clutch pedal hinge is worn out and and rubbing up against the medal and when I push the clutch in it moves around a lot. Since it moves around it doesn't allow the clutch to disengage the tranny all the way and I can't shift smoothly and can barely get it into reverse without damaging something in the tranny.

My question is if any of you have had this problem and know how to fix it, or if it's even fixable? I never noticed before but, I'm assuming it had some kind of rubber bushing in there to keep it from rubbing up against the medal, if so, that's obviously gone..

Thanks for any info you can provide!

Wow, thanks for the post on this topic! I have an 80' Brat that has tranny problems like the reverse thing you are saying. I wonder if I am experiencing the same problem? I haven't looked into it too much as I just recently bought it and just got it running after sitting for a long time.

It might be worth looking at. Good luck!

Wow! That sucks. I got everything fixed up today though.

Can you take a couple pictures of what broke? I tried looking up there but couldn't really tell if anything was broken. There is a definate squeek when I press the clutch but everything works just fine. So I'm not really sure if mine is cracked or not.

Definite squeak will result in definite problem.

Routing isn't too difficult but make sure anyways and that hanger spring with the sling over the cable is key - as I've witnessed on my 78.

There is a sheetmetal piece that should be atop the bell housing area more towards the firewall. There's a spot for that spring to hang on.

Anything you can do will help over time. When not right we go thru cables in like 15k.

Sure! I should be able to get some up tomorrow hopefuly.

My clutch squeaked really bad before it got so bad I could barely shift. Wouldn't be surprised if you're pedal box needs repaired. I'll get some pictures up ASAP.

Better late than never I guess, anyway...

As you can see my welder reconstructed the hole by smoothing out the area and welding a washer on so the pin wouldn't move around when I pushed the clutch in.

This picture shows the clutch pedal (on the left) and the brake pedal (on the right) that pin goes through both pedals to the left side where the welding took place. If you're having trouble, that's where I would start. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much! I'll take a look and check how mine looks.

This seems to not be such an issue on RHD models, at least none of mine have this issue. Clutch cables snapping at unexpected moments, yes(!) but not cracking in the pedal box.

Of course our RHD models have much shorter clutch cables and no cable hanger, this must place more stress on the pedal box.
