02 Subaru impreza outback sport ticking?

Recommended Posts

Hi new here! I've inherited my grandma's Subaru. It currently has 60,000 miles on it. I believe it's the 2.5 motor. I live in Minnesota so as you know the weather can be cold and when the vehicle sits outside in the morning it sounds like a kid sticking a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel as we were kids. As I accelerate it gets faster but after driving for 15 20 minutes it seems to go away. That right now is the only issue that is bothering me besides that it makes weird noises sometimes when I just started and put it into gear it sounds like wHaachhaaachh for a second or to and goes away. the ticking is not always there but it is normally there when I get my car and leave for work. If anybody can help me out that would be great. From what I've read it could be what people are saying is piston slap or that Tick of death.

The tick of death was an occurance on the 80's and early 90's models.

Piston slap is a deeper tone, more of a muffled knock.

Ticking is usually valve train related. Possibly the valve lash clearance needs to be adjusted, but that doesn't typically get better or go away when the engine is warm.

When was the last oil change? What kind of oil was used?

The rattly sound you describe is probably heat shields on the exhaust pipes. They make a hell of a racket when they get loose, but they don't hurt anything.

It's more noticeable when I start moving forward I can hear it. When I back up after work today sounded like a someone was ripping the radiator off and bashing the fan. Soon as I started to go forward I hear the noise. Plus I put the pedal to the floor and it over spun or didn't catch gears and the rpms shot up took foot off pedal and watched them climb back down and as if I was going thru the gears. it's weird
