ea81 clutch cable... What the hell?

Recommended Posts

from my XT experience:

take a picture or make a careful drawing before you do.  on the XT's i remember it wasn't entirely clear/obvious how it goes back together.

get good lighting and stand on your head in the drivers side footwell to see what's going on. lol it's simple, but can't see down there.

There's clip on the end of the shaft that the pedal rides on. You'll need some really good pliers to get it off.

There are some plastic bushings that ride on the shaft, make sure you don't lose those when you pull the pedal off.

Once the pedal is off, you should have enough movement and slack to get the end of the cable off and out.

It's the same attachment style as your throttle cable. Rotate until the cable slips free and you can finagle the end out.

There should be a little  lock washer thingy that goes over the bolt that holds on the pedal and cable. you can get the little bugger off if you use a flat head driver or some good needle nose pliers. after that, the pedal should just slip off.

On mine there's a clevis pin that goes through but on the end its too wide to fit through the hole when i try to pull it and if I try to push it back it jams against metal.

OK I got what you're saying twitch, you have to remove the clip that attaches the pedal to the shaft first then the clevis pin can come out. Got it. Thanks.

Okay here's what you do...

First, remove the big wash locker thingy (sorry, forgot technical term) that keeps the pedal from falling off the brass bar. the blue arrow is pointing to it in the pic..post-54976-0-96106400-1424645568_thumb.jpg
Now you should have enough wiggle room to get that smaller clevis pin (just to the left of the lock washer in the pic) off of the pedal/cable, because you will be able to almost completely take off the clutch pedal (when you do get the clevis pin off, you WILL be able to completely take off the pedal). Does any of this help?

  • 2 weeks later...

circlip ? brass bar ?? we only got a mild steel or maybe tool steel axle pivot bar for the pedals !!

haha, yeah well the pivot bar has a brass-looking hue to it. Plus im no metal expert so to your average joe it kinda has the same appearance as brass.
