EJ trans into EA82 body Questions

Hello fellow Suby fans!

The PandaWagon will be in need of a transmission very soon and I want to go EJ. From what I have read so far, I need:

The trans (duh)

EJ flywheel ( for that specific trans? )

EJ Clutch kit ( for that specific trans? )

Rear diff (if the ratio is different from your current diff)

If going to a newer EJ trans, will have to convert to a hydro clutch:

Pedal box

Master cylinder

Slave Cylinder

Hoses (probably will get new)

(do I need the EJ brake booster?)

Driveshaft length needs to be changed

I've read that the driveshaft from an EA 4SP auto will work. true?

If not, who makes a good driveshaft that's repairable?

I have read that the EA speedo cable fits the EJ trans. true?

Mounting trans to body:

This is where I get a bit lost. I think if your EA82 is built after 87.5, that the entire XT6 trans crossmember  will work with a little drilling for the EJ trans mount. However, prior to 87.5, the XT6 trans crossmember will not fit because the tunnel is too narrow. The other thing is finding an XT6 trans crossmember, XT6s are becoming harder and harder to find.

So, since The PandaWagon is an early 87, what do I really need?

Center section of the EJ trans crossmember

The EA82 man trans crossmember and the EA82 auto trans cross member? Custom?

Is there anyone on here that builds such an animal?

Also, is there a difference between the Phase I and Phase II engine/transmission combos? The PandaWagon has a Phase I EJ25, if I put a Phase II transmission in there, will it bolt up? Starter issues?

Thanks,

Ted

Phase I and Phase II transmission bellhousings bolt up the same.  around 1998 (i suppose with Phase II's) - the bellhousing went from 4 bolt to 8 bolt, but you can still interchange them just fine.  so there are differences but they don't limit you.

EJ's have cable and hydraulic clutches.  the hydraulic clutches require fluid changes, slave cylinders and hoses fail, less reliable, and are annoying to bleed.  not a big deal really if you're an avid hydraulic clutch lover, but not worth the added effort IMO.  you can swap the bits for whichever clutch style you want.  in other words that transmission isn't dedicated to one or another - just bolt on whichever style you want, but you'll be getting one or the other depending on trans and vehicle.

Flywheel and clutch kid, and flywheel have to match. I've put ej22 clutches on an ej25 trans and vice versa just fine.

You can use any EJ trans as either hydraulic or cable. To change from hydraulic to cable you change the hole the pivot is mounted in and get a cable clutch fork along with the clutch cable mounting bracket

Your GL brake booster is fine, just hook the vacuum hose up to the engine like normal.

Yes, you can just thread the GL cable into the EJ trans

Phase1/2 difference is the 4 vs 8 bellhousing bolts. It's not a big deal. If you put a 4 bolt engine on an 8 bolt trans you only end up with the top starter bolt. The starter flange takes all the torque from starting anyawy. I've run like this for years and it never caused an issue.
8 bolt engine on a 4 bolt trans is no issue.

  • 3 weeks later...

For trans crossmember I used the original EA piece, and modified it to accept the centrer section of a legacy trans mount. (required 2 holes drilled, a little grinding)  Then, the "rear" section i just used a piece of flat 1/2" steel bolted in were an EA auto trans crossmember would go.  Drilled 2 holes in that to accept the other end of the Legacy center section.

Shifter I cut and welded an EJ shifter (trans end) to an EA shifter (interior end) after the trans was fully installed to get the length of the stay and selector both correct.  I also ground the bracket off the shifter and moved it up about 1/2" to make the throw shorter.

I shortened the EA front driveline section by 2-1/4"

No XT6 parts required
