1983 sleeper GL?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to Subaru but have always loved them. I just bought a 1983 GL with the EA81 motor and high/low 4wd. I've found a few sites for forged parts and carbs and have read a few posts about turboing the EA81.

I will look through more posts on here to find what I can. In the mean time are there any pointers for squeezing power outta this thing. I just changed the timing to 8 degrees otdc because it was running rich. Still getting a little bog when pressing the throttle from idle.  I'm a little lost with the carb on this thing.it seems the air fuel mixture is done electronically??

Thanks in advanced for any suggestions!!

What form of "Gl" did you end up with?

Honestly, if you are really serious about going for h.p. I wouldnt waiste too much time on the ea81s. They are getting so hard to come by and many of them are just in poor shape. Research ej swap.

If you have an o2 sensor and an ecm your car is a feedback model. So some of the mixture control is done electronically. If there is a fault in the system it goes full rich.

As for your stumble it could could be too lean an idle adjustment or an accelerator pump issue.

I think they call it a leone?  It's a station wagon/hatch back.    I checked around the carb for adjustment screws and only found an idle tension. Raised the rpm to about 1200 then dropped to 800.   I've found forged parts for it internally but perhaps the block is not going to handle the power?  I will look into the EJ swap  Thank you for your help.  For the time being could you help me with identifying the carb?  It only has 1 barrel and has some form of metal bowl off the passenger side.  Thanks again

So its a 4 door wagon or a 2 door hatchback? No matter congrats on the new toy.

As for carb i.d., the hitachi can easily be mistaken for a 1 bbl at quick glance. Its a 2bbl progressive one hole in front and one in back. Look at the side of the carb where the throttle linkage is and make sure theres not 2 throttle shafts, or look hard down the throat to see. Another easy way to tell if its a carter/weber 1bbl is the top air filter mounting stud has a beam across the top supporting the stud. The hitachi has the stud mounted in the throat of the carb. Also the float chamber is in the back on the 1 bbl, and off to the driver side on the 2 bbl.

If it is a hitachi 2bbl, the idle mixture screw is In the base of the carb in the front. Theres a small hole above a slightly larger hole. The larger lower hole will have the screw hidden inside. Need a small flat screwdriver, its similar for the 1bbl keep in mind if its a feedback model the access to the mixture screw may be blocked.

I think I found a carb I will put on it. I think it is called a 68/68. still a little lost of compatible models for parts. will the brats suspension fit onto my gl? I would like to get something more performance based. in the long run I would like to use the car in the sand dunes and a little 4x4ing.

It's a single barrel carter. 83 models only.

Not a hitachi. A very odd duck. Hitachi would be an upgrade and even to add a weber you would need the hitachi manifold.

It's not electronic in the slightest.

Don't bother thinking you're gonna make this thing a hot rod. Not without an EJ swap. Not a good platform for "performance". There is nothing offered for suspension.

But look around on here and you will find lots of ways to "one off" modify things using parts for other cars. Most all will have to be modified/fabricated.

You are likely referring to a weber 38/38.

Too big IMO.Especially since it is synchronous.

Most folks use a progressive 32/36 from the DGV or DFV series.

It is not going to be a powerhouse regardless of the carb.

Most of the brat stuff is compatible.

Some nit picking.

Subaru used carter weber 1bbls 82-84.

http://mastertechmag.com/pdf/1988/10oct/198810IS_CarterWeber1Barrel.pdf

49 state 2wds that had one WERE feedback controlled and had an O2 sensor.

4wds did not.

My 82 4wd did not.

I liked the carter weber more than my hitachi equipped car.

The carter weber has more throttle/venturi area at LOW rpms because the hitachi secondary would still be closed.

Sorta the same effect you get w/swapping to a 32/36 w/a mechanical(non vacuum) secondary.

For suspension apparently miata stuff works, at least ea82

I saw one of these weber equipped models at a pickapart yard, when I saw the car I thought "oh awesome! they have an old gen subie! I will be able to find some parts after all!" I opened of the hood expecting to see that hitachi with 50,000,000 hoses coming out of it and I opened it up and I was like "What...the...crap?  haha figured out it was just a different model.

Your wrong.

My info is from FSM. Carter's re mechanical, for 4wds.

2wds asd Cali's in those years use hitachi feedback. There were no carter feedbacks.

The Carter's used in Subaru's are not webers

You are still having trouble with reading comprehension.

I have a FSM too.

It CONSTANTLY refers to the carb as a CARTER/WEBER

Have a look at page 5-7 in your 84 manual.

It is a diagram for 49 state 2wd Carter/Webers with an O2 sensor and computer.
