Clutch cable failure

Recommended Posts

In the 2.75 years I've had my 1978 GL, I've had the great privilege of replacing the clutch cable 7 times. It's broken in a variety of places and I've been able to figure out only a couple of the reasons as to why it broke there. The one that plagues me the most is what's pictured, where the housing support ring shears off and no longer retains the housing causing a lack of enough tension to apply the clutch. I don't know if this is a crummy part from O'Reiley and that's why it has a one year warranty or if I'm installing it incorrectly, because I'm not entirely sure what the rubber flap with the bolt is for and never attach it.

Thanks for your time.

That sling , many of which are leather , has a spring that hooks from it to a small sheet metal piece atop the transmission. The mid point assistance makes a huge difference in tension. I've tried to use a leather shoelace in place of the spring but instead ran it up to a spot I could tie off to but that was not good enough.

The rubber piece with the washer is the grommet for the firewall and you want to tuck that washer into the rubber - you'll see when you get up close to it.

Yes , these are a pain. Check the pedal box for breaks in the side wall caused from excessive pressure we all tend to apply in hopes of shifting near normal.
