the goat Posted May 26, 2004 Share Posted May 26, 2004 i was just wondering why there seems to be a much larger subaru population on the west coast than on the east coast. when searching for soob's for sale online most are on the west coast and it seems many (not all) of the members found here are in the western half of the u.s. any thoughts? i am a proud soob owner here on the east coast and thought i must be misplaced. Adam N.D.J. Posted May 26, 2004 Share Posted May 26, 2004 This is whot I've heard talking to a few of the dealership guys. A lot of it has to do with our large western world shipping ports. Most of the stuff from asia and the pacific ring come in through either Seattle or the large ports in Cali, and a bit into Portland. Back when Soobs were being shipped to the states, they would hit the west coast, then it was up to dealers to have them shipped around the country, seeing as how back in the 80's there wasn't too much shipping back and forth across the country as it was a bit expensive, only a few Subaru dealer were on the east coast, and they got more plentiful as you move west. As far as over here, we not only had LARGE dealerships, but also small Rural dealers that usually stocked 5-10 subaru's tops, most had small signs hanging out front, and usually one maybe two may garage. I ran across one of these out in eastern Oregon, or whot was left of it, it was a gas station like building, with a small sign (maybe 3x2 feet) on a small pole (bout 10 feet). Talking to the locals there they said it was a dealership that shut down in the late 80's. Was really kewl. So thats why we have the Subaru superpower over here. And judging by posts following Eric's, I see there is certainly some regional pride in members as well as our vehicles (and rightly so). My point is proven: there are outstanding members and great human beings wherever Subarus are found. And as for AK, we have Snowman, and a couple of other characters. So there! I think its the rust (or lack of it that is) but also...some big name guys recruiting people to USMB. Austin, Ezap, Qman, John Bloom (Mudrat), Bratsrus1, West Coast Subaru Show/PNWSEC and many others on the west have brought MANY people to this board. The true diehards of the East/Midwest that run around putting business cards on windshields and tailgating every Brat/Wagon in town till they stop...just cant keep up. The biggest promo USMB can get is a lifted Brat/Hatch, etc running around with a USMB sticker on it. It just draws so much attention. Almost as much as a mint Brat in the midwest does. Not to mention a lifted mint brat. Im going to go thru a LOT of business cards in Colorado after I move. There is regional pride, and that goes deeper then just west or east coast, but the most important thing is our pride in our ride, Subaru. bratman2 Posted May 26, 2004 Share Posted May 26, 2004 I am here on the east coast and we own three Subs, 87 Brat for almost 7 years, 93 Legacy fwd 3 years and 2003 Legacy 1 year. I guess you could call us odd. Visiting my oldest daughter in Colorado, that is were we bought the 2003 Leg, I would say they are the Subaru capital of the US. Sitting on her balconey sipping coffee and eyeing Pike's peak in the morning every 20th car or so was a Subaru passing by on the four lane below. I think the drier air out west also helped stretch the life span of older Subs. In So Cal there are a good number of older soobs, but the newer Impreza, Legacy models are by far the most common. Old/New, East West, it's all Soob and it's all good. At any given intersection in the entire city you will find at least 3 Subarus! It's weird! At the busyest intersection in town or a neighborhood stop sign. At least Three Subarus!
