My 2000 Impreza went from Connecticut to Arizona for my daughters graduate schooling.  we put new tires on before she drove it out there. While out in the west she had a friend of a friend that worked on cars, he seemed to be knowledgeable and help her with advice when needed. last fall she needed a rear wheel bearing done he did it for a decent price. 5 months later after driving all over Arizona and visits to new Mexico and such she blew out a rear tire middle of the night on one of the interstates. the police officer that stop said the other rear tire was also ready to go, so it was an expensive towing and then she bought 4 new tires and got decent money for the two front tires.  we came a week later for graduation and then my wife and I drove the car back across the country. we left AZ on a Sunday the car felt like it was crabbing down the road.  Monday morning we pulled off the highway and found a place to have it aligned they did a good job but did say the rear was still a little off.  well after 2700 miles we pulled in to our driveway when I looked at the rear tires they were worn out on the edges. 

  had my local mechanic check them he could not find a reason that the rear tire was toed in so bad.  with some on line research I thought I had a cure from one of the sube websites I looked here also. but when we put it back on the lift looking what I found was not for this car. but looking at and measuring things found the rear control arm was slightly longer on the bad side as on the good side.  also all the control arms and the hub were not as gritty and rusty as on the good side.  I think the guy who did the wheel bearing just found a used hub and assembly and switched them the hub on there had the stuff for antilock brakes and this car does not have them. so it must have been from a newer model and the rear lateral control arm was about one quarter of an inch longer.  bough a new arm from rock auto. and everything seems to line up again now we need to buy two rear tires and hope to get another couple of years out of this great car.  so two things be careful who works on the car and when using used parts make sure they fit.  sorry for being wordy but if this helps someone good.

Just FYI I wouldn't say newer.  My '96 Impreza OBS has 4 Wheel ABS and it was an option on many cars of various years.  That is not a tell tale sign that it is a "newer" part.  

 

What it sounds like is he possibly pulled them off a Legacy or something similar instead of from an Impreza.  Might have thought they were all the same.

 

Either way, it is great advice to always make sure the parts are a correct interchange.  Junkyards are not always right either...........
