Lost Keys

I lost both keys to my Crosstrek in two weeks!  The dealer wants to charge over $250 per key.  I've gotten quotes from local locksmiths from $200 to $380!

I can't afford any of these - I see online that you can order keys and have them cut and programmed yourself.  Can this be done?  Has anyone tried this ?

Thanks!

Having worked at a dealer, people often come in with 'eBay keys', to be programmed thinking they've gotten a deal, only to find dout the keys they bought don't work.

It's hit or miss on the knock off keys.

You can't really program keys yourself, as it requires access to the car's computer system.

isn't there 3 keys that the vehicle comes with? 2 electronic keys and 1 plain sinple key (forgot what they are called). the only bad part is that the simple key, you can't open your doors remotely or open the hatch, you gotta do it the old fashion way and open 1 door and then click the unlock button on the door itself to open the rest..

That 3rd key is the valet key.

Since my wife was constantly misplacing her keys for our then 2009 Journey, she purchased blanks online and since our '09 could self program, programmed the additional key for her use when she did misplace her normal set of keys.We now have a 2010 Journey that requires going to the dealer to have any additional keys programmed. Last I checked they charge $50 per key programming.Fortunately, we contact to Locksmith and he made  additional keys for my car.

Dealer is charging you such costs because they have high technology machines through which the keys have been cut down and then programmed.Cost shared above is the normal cost as far as i am concerned but yeah Locksmith is another option for you to have those new keys.

Very few locksmith will be able to make those keys  because Locksmith won't prefer buying such costly machines.Locksmith companies who have vast business will buy such one's because they big staff as well as enough market value to neutralize the cost of that key making machines.

Old thread but my dealer charges $75 to program "any number of keys and remotes at the same time". So I bought a couple extra keys and remotes off eBay and had them all programmed for $75.

If memory serves me right they said they have to have all the keys and remotes together, even the ones you currently have to program a new key. They're programmed "as a set" so to speak. I think that's what they said, unless that varies by model or I misheard.

The eBay keys and remotes worked fine but I did make sure they had decent reviews, they look identical to my originals, may be OEM for all I know, and didn't buy the first key that popped up in a google, eBay, or Amazon search.

I wanted to know if it's a proximity thing or the key needs inserted, I think I asked here before and it people think it needs inserted. If proximity, I wanted to just hide a key in the steering cover and use whatever key blank I wanted. If I didn't have three kids I'd be figuring out a work around because I don't care or need it, Id guess someone's done it by now?
