junkets Posted May 27, 2004 Share Posted May 27, 2004 I have inherited a Sub that sat for a long time and have tried to fix it. I have failed. Any suggestions would be welcome. Below are some helpful facts. Thanks. SYMPTOMS Car will not idle. Cranks and will run if reved up and down, but dies even if peddle is held to the floor. Idled high once for a few minutes, but would not run after restart. (The choke probably kept it running this one time.) SUSPICIONS Carburetor is the problem. Old gas may also be a/the problem. Vacuum hoses are causing a leak. HISTORY Car sat for several years with a blown head gasket. Engine would crank and milky fluid would shoot from the radiator. Engine replace with engine from a 1989 Sedan with fuel injection and 130,000 miles. Could not keep the fuel injection because of electrical differences. (Lights had constant power on one and constant ground on the other.) Engine donor 1989 car was running but wrecked and had a cracked valve cover. Valve cover was taken from original engine but is leaking at the bottom of the gasket. Installed a new clutch at the same time as engine swap. Have never had the chance to test. Rebuilt carburetor at the same time as engine swap. I can't remember which of the two carburetors used on this model that it is. I can’t find any markings that have helped identify the carburetor. Car has never run since the engine swap/carburetor rebuild/clutch replacement. The gas is a mix of old and new but I did treat the gas with some "gas renewer". At this it's all old gas and probably should be drained. It does appear not to be a fuel pump problem though, as the carburetor gets gas. The vacuum hoses are a jumbled disconnected mess. Theres a winner of a starting point. Is there a hose diagram on the underside of the hood..? I have FSMs, but they are all 88 and newer.. No carb info. subiemech85 Posted May 28, 2004 Share Posted May 28, 2004 1. remove all vac lines and plug holes, add stuff AFTER it runs 2. drian tank, there is a drain plug 3. change filters 4. if it was mpfi and you stick a carb on it won't work unless you changed the heads 5. once you have done the above, ask if you still have problems Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

This is the way that my dad left them and I do not know enough to sort them out. considering the motor has been swapped, it could have had timing belts installed, or front seal that would require taking the belts off, and its possible the mechanic lined up the belts wrong. how many times has a subaru broken a timing belt, to have some mechanic install new ones and tell you the car has bent valves and wont run right because he aligned both cams at 12:00 and the crank at 0 deg. you should check out the belt timing following this procedure http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/subaru/service/timingbelt.htm Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

warfride Posted May 30, 2004 Share Posted May 30, 2004 I had a problem with my '84 GLF not idling and It was just that the air filter heat setting was wrong. Just check that if it's set to summer that it's in the nick just below the middle and not at the extreme setting. (that'll sound stupid but it'll make sense when you look at the air filter) It's a long shot, but sometimes it's something simple like that.
