87 rx 5spd trans questions

hey all, first time rebuilding a manual transmission and am a bit nervous about getting it back together. all the gears and bearings look perfect (low mileage trans) so basically just resealing it. However I would like to swap in the 1.59 low range set from a gl d/r but im not sure which parts I need. Been searching for rebuild procedure but haven't found anything. Mostly i need the torque specs/ sequence for the case bolts and any other tips you guys could chime in about putting it together would be great. Thanks!post-38557-0-83261900-1440443287_thumb.jpg

You're going to need the complete input shaft (2 pieces) plus the side shaft for the low range.

I'm not 100% sure if you need the output shaft as well to match up the gear ratios. 1st & 2nd are part of the input shaft itself due to their small size, so you may need to swap 1st & 2nd off the output shaft to match them up if those ratios are different.

3rd, 4th, 5th you can swap off your RX input shaft.

 

do some searching for the ratios first.

I have this hear and a bunch of stuff for torque specs gear ratios et. Kind of hard to make out, like i said first time doing this and im really excited to figure out how this actually works. Which gears exactly change for low range? ive been playing with it and i think i figured out how the gears 1 through 5 work but the low range and diff lock thing dont quite make sense yet. Also its from a turbo rx so it already has the larger stubs. Thanks

But on the first pic, the shaft in the top left is cut into 2, and an extra shaft is beside it. There is a gear at each end of the 2nd shaft, plus corresponding gears on the main shafts.

in high range, the synchro locks the 2 shafts together, in low range, that synchro unlocks, and a synchro on the 2nd shaft locks so it uses the gears & therefore the 2 input shafts will spin at different speeds.

 

for the centre diff, it's like a normal diff in that it has pinion gears inside, but on the outside, the crown wheel & pinion are in line, instead of being at 90 degrees. There is a dog tooth sleeve on the outside of this diff, so when locked, it locks the 2 output shafts together.

its the best tear down ive found so far and i figure the torque specs and stuff should be similar enough. So far ive sourced all the seals except the two o rings on the front. the large one that you can see above and a smaller one which im assuming is on that shaft you mentioned because its not listed above. as far as swapping gears i think im going to hold off for now and just reseal this trans. later on i think ill give a shot a making a hybrid trans. If anyone has any info/ part number for the orings please let me know. These two orings are the only things holing me up from getting my car back together haha

Ok this is a 1.59 L series Low range into a later AWD box but along with the photo's will help you out as what you are doing is I assume a Full time RX AWD Box conversion not the part time RX box we saw in Australia with the same wimpy 1.1 low range.
