What would cause...

...oil consumption/dissapearage??? Over the 450 miles i drove today, the GL-10 used 1 qt. of Mobil 1 fully synthetic 10w-30. There are no leaks other than a very minute ammount from the cam covers, I thought the rear main seal was leaking, but its not longer dripping oil like it was...i guess it was just left over from when the front main seal was puking 2 qts out every 50 miles.....which BTW was replaced 1500 miles ago with the OE part from the dealer.

So...would this just be normal for a turbo shortblock with 160k miles on it, and a turbo with 140k miles on it? Oh and the PCV system is not hooked up, the valve is sealed up, and the system breathes thru a little K&N breather filter....one hose from one side, meeting the other side, teed together, and the back vent teed in, and the filter sitting on top of all that. No oil that I can find comming out of that....

Any ideas???

If the oil isn't in the coolant, or on the ground, then it's being burnt, or going into the exhaust at the turbo. You don't lose a quart of oil in 450 miles and not know about it unless it's going out the exhaust. Your engine would be an oily mess after a bath like that. I say turbo, or valves, or rings. It's got to be getting into the exhaust stream somehow - I can't think of any other ways....

I also think you'd be seeing alot of blue smoke if it was going out the exhaust, unless synthetic doesnt make blue smoke. (that would make a good trick for getting rid of your worn out beaters  ) The only way I could see you losing that much oil from leaking and not see it is if theres a hose pointing right down at the ground, and it only squirts when you drive.

I know that when the rings went on the last engine, i would see blue smoke...and it used mobil synth....But the only smoke I see is the richness of the mixtrue at high RPMs on this engine. Maybe there is a leak....but there is nothing in the coolant other than water, and only small spots on the floor from the cam covers......

I'm with GD here. Sounds like it's getting burnt off. Prolly wouldnt even see the smoke with that little of oil consumption. Tha'ts realy not an alarming rate of oil consumption but it is noticable.

I've had PCV valves get stuck open causing above average oil consumption. Might start there. Also smell your exhuast. Even though you cant see the smoke I bet you can smell burnt oil. It has as pretty signature smell.

How's the oil pan gasket? Look really good with a flash light up between the pan and main crossmember. That's another trouble spot for oil leaking.

Good luck and I wouldnt be too woried unless the rate of consumption is increasing quickly :)

No oil leaks from the pan gasket. The PCV valve is closed off as I said, the PCV system is a beather filter and some tubes. No oil comming from there.

So...buring or leaking from somewhere else...thats acceptable for now. Atleast its not like it was when the front main seal was blowing oil everywhere, and its not dripping alot onto the garage floor.
