Just thought id share my excitement! *PICS! 5 point installed!*

Well....ive aquired a Corbeau reclining seat...for free...its kick butt. And in near perfect condition. Just has a very very very small hole (size smaller than a pea) on the back side of the seat in the fabric.....

And....taking some springs (5 used, 1 new) back to Muscle motorsports today...i was able to work it enough to get a 5 point harness....brand new.

 

And its all going into the GL-10 tomorrow! IF i can adapt the seat bracket, and make a bar for the shoulder harness. ive got all the tools to do so...I just need to see what kind of materials i need to get, and if I have the $ to get them....which I dont. lol

The rear is kinda temporary...until I fab up something like this from boxer4racing.com....

Anyhow, its temporary, as in the should harness in technically not installed correctly at all. Its a Y harness, meaning the shoulders bolt on at one spot on one peice, instead of two like alot of them do. Ive got 2-2ft sections of 520 lb tensil strength chain bolted to it, and in turn, those two are bolted to the floor where the seat is anchored down at.

 

Either way, its holding me in the seat 1000000000000000000000000000000 times better than any stock factory seat belt could. Im wearing the car now, not riding in it. :D

I won't rant about the improper mounting, but I will caution you that if you get in a wreck, that's going to break your shoulders :) ...

 

Nonetheless, when all is said and done, it's going to look awesome in there!

 

Where did you attach the anti-submarine belt?

Samo is completely right...the rear of the harness should NEVER go down anywhere close to vertical. I wouldn't even consider anything beyond about 45-degrees from horizontal personally. The reason, is that doing so can cause serious spinal compression in an accident. You want them as close to level as possible while using the strongest mounts possible. Generally in a car without a harness bar, roll bar, or roll cage, the attachment points for the rear lap belts is used (that's where the Sparco/Sabelt 3-point harness attaches on my Impreza). Just unbolt a lap belt in the rear, then bolt it back with the bolt going through the harness hardware in addition to what was there before (the best thing about using stock belt points, is that you know they are strong enough to handle safety restraint connections).

Indeed. Like I said, this is temporary, and I should have the WJM Harness bar made and installed at some point....SOONER rather than later. Ive read over the Simpson installtion notes and such....I knew that installing the harness like so was not good, but hey, I wanted to see how it fits and its only temp until i get the bar made. I dont think I will be using the rear seat belt attachment points...simply because I want to retain a full interior as possible.

Why would this affect your interior? The only reason my rear seat is out is because my autocross class (Street Mod) allows it. (In fact, I'm about to reinstall it soon.)

 

If you mean that you are blocking a rear seat when you are driving, you shouldn't use harnesses on the street for safety reasons. Harnesses will protect you better in normal accidents but they are suicide for rollovers as the roof can collapse and you can't bend down (since the harness doesn't allow that movement like the stock "tensioner-based" belts do). That's why the Schroth belts with the tensioners are the only DOT-legal harnesses out there. Cops can (and in some cases will) write a ticket for that.

 

Harnesses are intended to be used with roll cages (which prevent collapsing of the roof) and they aren't really safe without a helmet to prevent head-roll cage impacts. So unless you plan on driving around with a helmet (which might attract a little police attention LOL), then I wouldn't drive with the harness on the street...hehe :)

 

(That said, people still do it...it's your choice...blah, blah, blah...I just want to make sure you know all the facts before you make the decision...hehe :D )

you have to get a bar to go across the back... if you don't you will compress your spine every time you go over a bump and eventually you will f**k up your back really bad and won't be able to turn your body...

WJM,

 

As another board member looking out for your safety, I must say "DO NOT GET IN A HEAD ON WITH THAT SET UP" you'll be a lot shorter when it's over.

 

I just installed a simson 5 point in my Impreza. For the shoulder strap mounting point I bolted the mount down in the cargo area, under the carpet etc just behind the back seat. The harness runs under the rear seat back.

The cool thing is that when not Auto-Xing, I can tuck the whole shoulder harness into the seat and presto, intact and stock looking interior. Should be applicable to your GL-10

 

Look around the motorsports forum at NASOIC on the harness bar idea. When I was doing research I found alot of references to "decapitation bars" I believe the problem is if they are not bolted in rock solid and thing go really wrong, you're screwed. It is of course ideal to have a full roll cage but there goes the intact interior....

 

Of course, If you, like me, are just trying to stay in your seat without jamming your knees into the console and door and pushing back againts the steering wheel, you're not really using this thing for safety, so that needs to be takin into account.

im assuming and hoping those chains are very temporary, because 1.) I wouldnt trust home depot swing set chain to hold me in my seat in a crash. :grin: 2.) Im pretty sure there isn't a single safety inspector that would let you autocross with it, and 3.) its just plain nasty lookin. I wouldnt want to be in the back seat in an accident either, for fear of broken chain links whipping around after being subjected to thousands of pounds of tension.

Get that corbeau and a bar across and then you're off to the races.

Well the way you have it set up, the lap belt and submarine belt are the only things that is functional, the shoulder harness just holds your body to the seat back. You should anchor the shoulder belts to a rear seat belt anchor point, then they will keep the top part of your body from going forward.

Again, all very temporary...and yes, mostly it was to test to see how well it keeps me from beiing jumbled around with those stiff sprigns and so much traction that the car has now. Once I get a harness bar made (it will be PROPER and not a decap. bar) everything will be peachy. :banana:
