I used to be a member in the early 2000's, right after purchasing my 1998 Legacy GT.  Now an owner of that same car plus a 2010 Outback.

I'm back as my weekend mechanic skills are needed again.  What was thought to be a bad MAF is now likely a bad fuel pump.  I plan on replacing the pump and fuel filter, but am trying to determine which brand to buy at my local orange logoed part store.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

240K and still (kind of, though not at the moment) going.

Peace,

Oquipah

Hesitation and bucking. Original thought was slipping clutch or bad tank of fuel. My Subie mechanic listened real time to my descriptions and in order of suggestions said bad MAF or fuel pump. Plugs and wires are newer (30k on them). He gave me a new MAF and said try this...this swap didn't work. My new plan is to hit the junkyard and pull one to replace mine. I'll also replace the fuel filter with a new one. My new question is, do I get a new filter/screen for the pump? What other new items should I replace while doing the swap?

Ps- no codes thrown

The symptoms do sound like a bad MAF but I'm sure that there are many other possible causes.  Not a bad idea to swap it out with a cheap junk yard one.  When my 90's MAF went bad it didn't set a code.

As far as the fuel pump, when mine failed, the car won't start at all, so I'm doubtful of the diagnosis.  What I did was replace the entire pump assembly, which is easily accessible, with one from the junk yard.  But you can test the pump by disconnecting the gas line to the filter and tape a coke bottle on and see if you can get gas when you run the starter.  And you can also put a pressure gage on the rail, although that's more difficult.

It had left me hanging. It stuttered then quit and wouldn't start again. Tried the MAF replacement and no go. Just finished up this afternoon with a fuel pump from a pull your own salvage yard and a new OEM FF. Running like a champ again! Threw a new air filter and some clean oil and an ecu reset and voila.
