"Engine/tranny is out. Preventive Maintenance Advice?"

Recommended Posts

Get a clutch kit so you have the through out bearing, pilot bearing, disk, and pressure plate. Rear and front main seals would be good for minimum. I would reseal the engine if it hasn't been done in awhile including head gaskets especially if you don't know when/if they have been before.  Replace the oil pan gaskets with rtv.

Replace the oil pan gaskets with rtv.

coudn't agree more with this. i am a strict OEM guy and never put aftermarket stuff or modifications on the engine but that cork gasket is complete crap, if you're looking for a leak, go right ahead, and do not use both RTV and the cork gasket, trust me theres people that do that.

im currently rebuilding the engine at the moment and spoiled the headgaskets due to the heads being on the wrong sides, yes i know im so stupid, i have no idea how i mixed them up but now that metal pipe that comes from the manifold can't screw into the block.

you will need that gasket from the manifold to the top of the head on both sides, reseal the oil pump, theres 3seals in total, big o ring, mickey mouse seal, and one behind the gear. when doing the clutch, take the flywheel to get it resurfaced flat unless you like the vibrating car when letting go of the clutch everytime (it gets old really quick) do the cam seals and note, theres also a big o ring behind those 2 bolts, if you don't have these seals as they are somewhat hard to find since no one knows what the hell your talking about, don't worry about them. theres also 1 small o ring on each Cam Sandwich as i like to call it, its for the oil rails so pressure reaches the rockers with no issues, also check your motor mounts, in manual transmission vehicles they take a beating. i bought a box with eveything in it from rebuilding the whole intake to everything on the engine, some seals i coudn't get anywhere else unless i bought it all as a whole.

"preventive maintenance" depends on the owner of what this means, an oil leak doesn't affect anything but its there slowly draining your oil, then theres me, where an oil leak means something is broken or about to, so honestly its up to you how far you want to reseal this engine.

i see that you mentioned that you just bought it so you might not know that between the cam sandwich and the head theres no such thing as a seal or gaskets, you must use RTV (i used red) even Subaru themselves used RTV there when the engine was new, so don't freak out that you can't find the gasket or whatever.

Okay... my roo doesnt leak oil... yet. there isnt any oil under the car, but I can see oil 'sweating' or mild seepage from the cam tower seals area, as well as from the oil pan area.... other than that the cam covers etc are dry and clean... or not oily, and as I said, there isnt any oil drops under my car whatsoever. So I planned to do both the oil pan gasket and the cam tower gaskets while the motor is out.

I read that when you do a clutch replacement to get the kit and some mention of these little clips. Does anyone have a part number for these little clips seeing as they do not come in the clutch kit? Also what is RTV? A sealant of some sort? I plan on purchasing en Exedy 15008 clutch kit, I'm assuming thats the right kit.

Also Subasaurus, you mentioned getting the flywheel resurfaced? where do I go to have that done?

turbosubarubrat, are you talking of replacing the oil pan gasket with a new oil pan gasket and this RTV stuff, or just the RTV stuff?

Thanks for all you guys advice.

Resurface the flywheel, local machine shop.
RTV is Room Temperature Vulcanize.  Silicon sealant / gasket maker.  Different types exist for different applications.

The cam seals are pressed into separate pieces that have an o-ring seal to the cam case.   Those could be seeping, and or the seals.

The "gasket" between the cam tower and the heads is anaerobic sealant.  MAJOR difference between that and RTV.  Any overage that oozes out of the sealing area will not harden, and get washed away by the oil.  Only the sealant in the gap, that does not get air, will solidify.  You don't want RTV floating around, or possibly blocking things.

i let mine dry for about 20min before installing it for this reason, i agree, if you just slap it on immediately then there might be some issues.. but i've used RTV twice before with great results, this being the third now, but i don't coat the thing in a massive amount of RTV, now thats just asking for a clog... but i clean up as much as i can afterwards before closing up the valve covers.

but then again never knew exactly what went inbetween there, so i learned something new :P so Tekknic stick with the Anaerobic Sealant instead of RTV for the cam towers, might be easier also..

hes talking about abandoning the cork gasket as a whole, Do Not Use It, and only using RTV between the block and pan.

and im not understanding your clips for your clutch, i've replaced 2 clutches before, one on a EA-82 and the other on a EJ-18. second EA-82 right now, so if there is such thing as clips in the bell housing, im interested..

Omar, thanks for clarifying the oil pan inquiry, and my bad on the clips for the clutch question, I meant the clips for the throw out bearing, but I think Ive found the parts. The Part number is 30539AA000.

DaveT Thanks for the info on RTV.

Ive just placed my order for an Exedy 15008 Clutch kit as well as two throw out bearing clips. Also I heard there is an seal or two that I may wanna have replaced something about the rear, something or another???

thanks

Nic
