Qiuck question on '82 Brat axles

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

New here & hoping you SubaGurus can answer a question or two for me. First the question(s) - for folks not wanting to read about my project, then a little background on my project.

1) How the heck do you remove the rear tri-pots (hex-pots?) from the rear dif? I knocked out the roll pins, but they do not budge! Is there a clip inside the diff or something? The manual I have is screwed up - it shows u-joints instead of CV joints....

2) Are the dif axle stubs the same size as the trans stubs? If I could remove the tri-pots, I could answer this question myself... :P

3) Edit: thought of another question. Are there other hubs that fit the '82 Brat front axles, with a different lug pattern? Would probably prefer a 5x100 pattern, since I have some wheels in that & they are readily available in 15" & 16". What rotor would I need? (I can make caliper brackets if I need to.)

Now for the project background: I'm putting the Brat drivetrain into a VW Baja bug. Turning it around backward so the VW engine is in the normal place. I'm going to be using VW bus gear reduction boxes in the back so I can run huge rear mudders, & that will make the tires rotate in the right direction. I'm putting the diff in upside down so that the front tires rotate in the right direction. If the front Brat tri-pots will fit the rear dif, I won't have to have custom axles made for the front. I'll be making custom upper & lower A-arms both front & rear for the suspension, eliminating the struts. Just getting started but I'll post some pics in the near future if anyone is interested.

Thanks!
