Help: Speaker Adapters

I am looking for someone willing to fabricate some speaker adapters for the rear speakers of my 2000 Forester.

Hello Howard,

In answer to your question about rear speakers for your Subaru, I have both good news and bad news. The bad news is that Subaru uses a non-standard factory size for the speakers in this location. They use a 5" round speaker. The problem is that no aftermarket company that we deal with is making a 5" speaker right now.

The good news is that if you are willing to modify the opening in your vehicle, you can probably make an aftermarket speaker fit. The easiest way to do this would be to step down to a 4" round speaker and have a professional installer fabricate a mounting bracket/spacer to help hold the 4" speaker in place.

I did it. It's not difficult at all. Get a sheet of ABS plastic here:

Then mark a circle the same size as the 5" speaker and cut it out. Mark where the screw holes and guide holes are, and drill those out. Then use the template that comes with your 4" speaker to mount it inide that 5" circle. You may have to use bolts and nuts to hold the 4" speaker to the plastic (instead of the screws that come with it).

 

I did it for the front and rear 'cause I had 4 good 4" speakers out of my Volvo and didn't feel like buying new ones. If you want pictures lemme know. The '98 and 2000 models should be about the same.

Lemme take a look at them again, because I keep thinking a 6" speaker will fit in the back.

All of the speakers (front and back) are in brackets which must be used to make them fit properly. The fronts are 6 1/2" and the rears are 5".

So what is needed is an adapter to change the inside dimension of the rear brackets from 5" to 4".

I looked again, and I didn't have to make a bracket to fit the 4" speakers in the rear. I just mounted them to the plastic bracket that the old 5" speakers were in. Do you want to see a pic?

So what you're telling me is that I can use the old 5" bracket to mount the new 4" speakers ? I believe you but I don't see how it could work. :-\

What brand 4" speakers did you use ?
