Test Drive of Used 2002 WRX Wagon - Is this a decent buy WRX experts ?

Recommended Posts

I just drove a used WRX wagon. 2002, 35k miles, $17k, Blue.

Engine, looked about right for a couple of years old. Air intake from pass side wheel well. (standard ?) Didn't look like it had been cleaned up specially or anything.

Inside, pretty good condition with boost gauge. Some button on mirror (outside temp ?) didn't work, and compass was wrong. The car had a slight baseball glove kind of feel, maybe a bit too used feeling for only 35k miles. Seats very comfortable.

Driving, clutch was pretty heavy feeling. First gear kind of crunched in a couple of times, though all the other gears were fine, including backing it up in the parking lot after driving it (first gear synchros?). Gearshift was short throw and pretty foolproof on the go with a slight notchiness, but definitely fairly quick shift. Engine felt very strong with most power above 4000rpm or so. Plenty of turbo whistle on full throttle. Boost typically showing 0.06 I think, though it was hard to note with stuff coming towards me at high speed.

Impressions, well worth $16k unless someone else knows different. In which case, please post a reply.

Background, I am looking for a fast car. I already test drove a new Dodge SRT-4, which felt stable, solid and a heckuva lot faster, but the Subaru is fast enough and more machine for less money.

Mileage is good for an 02.

The air intake in the passengers side fender is standard.

The button on the mirror was most likely the auto dimming mirror, you can turn it on and off. Its nice, not too dark, but big trucks or suv's with HIDs dont blind you at night. I have it on my car, factory option.

Handling on these cars is awesome. Way better than the neon.

Good Luck! and if you get it watch out for the modding bug ;)
