Every Time I think I'm done,And it's running like a dream,I have another nightmare.This time Brat Will not start-wont pump fuel and will not fire.Has good spark Turns over well, Even with starting fluid- will not fire.What would kill power to fuel pump and not allow it to start ?Help Thank you

Timing could be off, spark plug wires could be out of order, bad spark plugs or wires, bad cap. Check all 4 wires and plugs for spark, make sure the distributor is lined up at tdc on #1, and double check the plug wire order. The fuel pump control unit is located under the dash on the drivers side by the hood release handle bracket.

If it won't fire with starting fluid, you have a spark or compression issue. Spark should be a blueish/orange color, not white or yellow and should easily jump a 1/4" gap. You could have a weak coil or wires, cap or rotor as turbosubarubrat mentioned. IIRC, the fuel pump controller needs to see a firing signal from the distributor or it won't turn on the pump. No spark and no fuel? I would suspect something with the distributor, ignition switch, wiring or a ground.

IT Started right up ? Checked everthing as was suggested above,The coil plugs plug wires dis cap rotor control unit are all new checked anyway,as well as grounds new fuel pump new ignition--- pulled fuel pump controller out took apart nothing burned (don't know how to test) put it back together an put it back in.Turn the key and it started ?So I will get new fp controler,Thinking it may quit again if thats what it is,Or was ????thank you all

the little black box up under the dash  ? It is a fuel pump power supply kill in case of what IGN ON, engine not running state

 

I used to think like skishop and the white or yellow coloured weak spark - been proven wrong twice when some other no go cause been sorted and tiny yellow spark fires up the old beasts like nothing else.

 

How bout you tell us how long, time and distance you have run this car.

What have you replaced recently and what did you do just before it stopped running like a dream.

You say has spark yet won't run on starter fluid. Did you wet the plugs with starter fluid. Wet plugs dont like to spark

Inside of cap was dry before - how long an far? Leave my newer ford home, Drive all the time when ever I need to go anywhere 3 to 5 times a week Usually not to far town is about 80 miles round trip.When I got the Brat last winter got no information or history with it,So i replaced a lot of the cheaper parts-plugs&plug wires cap rotor module coil pvc oil psi sending unit water pump oil pump alternator ignition switch (couldn't get key out half the time)All filters air gas oil and All fluids and all air lines Had a problem few months back,And had the carb rebuilt Twice not right the first time.Cleaned out fuel tank had hole fixed replaced and blew out lines and put on a new fuel pump. AND now several months have just driven it,Parked on side hill and car wouldn't start rolled down to flat ground to work on the next day .Next day it ran but didnt go anywhere that day next day would not start No Way And No did not wet plugs,, sprayed sparingly a little at a time trying to start.I had pulled plugs earlier to see if they were wet with gas from trying to start day before they were not.

Was it below freezing? Could moisture of gotten into the fuel line? If my Brat sits too much in cold weather my fuel pump will freeze with moisture in it. Eastern North Carolina has high humidity and damp air. I try keeping the tank full as possible. Run pure gas all the time but have started adding a few gallons of E10 which has helped somewhat.

Hasn't been that cold ?But- no power too fuel pump and would not fire with ether (starting fluid)That's what I came here for, thinking I couldn't be the first one this has happened to. Although this brat likes to be run every day-if it sits a few days it turns over like 30 times to start-if everyday just a couple turns and its running some one said this year was set up to run fuel pump when key is in start position and not just- power-will power fuel pump ? ?

Pull the disty cap up/off.

 

Look at the left side of the disty and you'll see a "C" shaped piece, mounted with 2 screws.

 

Remove the screws and check the magnet that is under there.

 

I have had one instance of the magnet being broke. Shattered actually.

 

If it ain't in one piece, you won't get proper spark, if you get spark at all.

 

Subaru part numbers for magnet are;

 

Pre '84 491987401

'84 and later 491988711

 

Not saying it's your problem, but it's left me sitting on the side of the road once.

you may get steered in the wrong tangental direction asking in here.

 

Can I offer you a coupla full stops and comma's to use in your posts?

 

, maybe even use the "enter" or "return" key at the end of the line a s d f g h j k l ; '  a few times ?

 

Is bloody hard to digest what you are writing

 

I may be guilty of leading you ashtray too if I don't say - you have already found one problem - no power to the fuel pump.

 

OK ? Fix that first. Either get someone who can do it safely or do it yourself. Pump needs pos power and neg grounding to run.

 

Rig that up temporarily even if just a power supply from your cig lighter socket if that works.

 

This similar sounding problem has happened to others and they have replaced, or bypassed the unit I mentioned in the post above. Can be confusing to understand due to the number of wires going into and out of it

 

You say when it is left more than a day or two, it takes a lot of cranking to start - this may go against the starting fluid working, may not either. Just what starting fluid do you use?
