87 gl hatchback cts/fuel gauge/oil pressure wiring help.

I finished getting the beast running by stripping all the emissions crap etc from the carb, but the previous owner had cut up much of the harness trying to get it running before me. On my instrument panel I don't have the fuel gauge, coolant temp sensor, or oil pressure working, or the instrument panel light for that matter.

Any idea on the best way to get these working again? I think I have an extra harness in my box of parts but I would prefer not to replace the whole thing, I am hoping it will be possible to just run some new wiring, nice and easy. Thanks for looking and any input you have!

I have an '87' DL and I 'spect the GL is similar. The wire harness that operates  oil pressure and temp.gauge also operates some widgets on the carb on mine. It plugs into the main harness in the engine compartment by the distributor and coil. If your Soob runs OK otherwise then that harness section is probably OK. If it doesn't, then it's ugly and it's something in the main harness before it goes into the engine compartment, meaning there's no power going to that smaller harness. Had that problem with another '87' and never figured out a fix even with a post on this forum. It also affected the dash lights.

Perhaps a chiltons manual may help... i got one for my 1993 loyale I has wiring diagram... hopefully you can straight wire via fuse box by color as we know all too well color codes change at some point... ;)

Thanks, I will look around for one.

Thanks for the info, I think I know which small harness you mean, it also plugs into the idle cut off solenoid or whatever it is right? That whole piece was just cut in half, I had to strip all emissions, also had to take out the idle needle to get her running well. She runs pretty good now after cleaning up and getting the remaining vacuum hoses in the right spots. Not perfect yet but I still need to get around to checking the timing as well.

Perhaps I can try to find the wires from the sensors and run it to the cut portion of the main harness with the same color wire? Any suggestions for the fuel gauge?
