Parking brake lever came apart! 1993 Legacy 5 speed

Recommended Posts

Never saw that before. The wife was going to let the car roll forward a bit and when she pushed the release button it came out in her hand. Appears, to me, to be unscrewed but I could be mistaken. Now, no "clicky clicky" , so the parking brake doesn't work at all. I haven't figured out how to take the console apart so that I can have a peek at what might be the matter but I suspect PART of the problem is that the rear brakes need some attention. Any ideas?

Maybe fixed at zero dollars and not much labor. Here's how I did it, thanks to "Woods Wagon" (4 Oct 2007), I held the lever up so I could get a decent view, took a small pair of needle nose pliers and a small pair of forceps to get the remainder of the button and the tiny broken bits out. While the handle is pulled up, grab the rod with the pliers, give it a slight pull, and it will stay up on its' own. Then I put the spring back in and screwed the button back on and gave it an extra couple of twists with the pliers but didn't get it honking tight. Works as advertised thus far but knowing that I can modify something else to work instead of buying a "new" old button or a handle from a scrap yard or ebay  if it breaks again is comforting. Any Subie owners round my neck of the woods? I would like meeting some people who appreciate the little beasties.
