putting EJ22 into the 86 wagon

ok for $425 im getting a running EJ22 w/ wiring harness, fuel pump, computer, power steering pump, alt, and a/c compressor

 

and then i have to make an adapter to hook it to my EA82 D/R 5sp,

 

but here is my question, how do i hook up the A/C lines from my stock 86 car to the new 1996 compressor, will i have to get custom lines made?

 

if i do ill cut my stock ones and the EJ22's and then weld them together.

as long as you convert to 134a you should be ok. The lines, however, I would have done at an ac shop...you cant just weld them up...they either braze or solder them...let us know how it goes...sounds like the wagon is coming along nicely...any updated pics?

 

you still coming to AZ? it was 111deg today! make sure the wagons cooling system is up to par!

Dude forget the AC let's talk about the motor swap :D

 

Do you plan on using the EJ22 main crossmember and fiting it to your unibody or modify the existing crossmember to accept the EJ22 motor mounts?

 

Any more specific plans on that adapter? How about spline count on the EJ22 vs the 5sp DR shaft? Will the throwout fork and bearing on your 5sp DR interface with the clutch on your EJ22 flywheel well enough to properly enguage/disenguage the clutch?

no, i am ether thinking of going with a 12mm thick aluminum adapter and run the full EA82 clutch and flywheel settup i have now and just elongate teh wholes, same with the fron crossmember.

 

 

or i might jest get the 5sp EJ22 tranny and 4.44 rear diff and basically swap the complete drive train.

 

im going to have a 2 core aluminum radiator for the 2.5rs rally cars, there are companies that make them, then get 2 12inch electric cooling fans tha will push over 1,000cfm from summitracing.com

 

everything else will be a peice of cake, just i have about a month and a half to get this done. before i do move to arizona.

everything else will be a peice of cake, just i have about a month and a half to get this done. before i do move to arizona.

i used a 3/8 aluminum plate, but after my trials i wish i used 1/2 inch, 12mm sounds appropriate. if the bolts will be 12mm wide, then the depth of the metal and threads is just enough.

 

u used the full ea82 clutch and flywheel, the flywheel will fit onto the crank snout and the pilot holes will match. i elongated the holes on the flywheel, then fit it against the ej motor, then started what bolts i coulds, and poked with a dremel the other holes that needed touching.

 

i used the flexplate washer from the automatic as a template. my drill bit had a tendenct to walk, so i had to use a bigger bit to finish.

 

keep in mind from wha tit looked to me is the ej bolt pattern has no offset hole, they are all even, unlike the ea82. but the flywheel the way i did it will bolt to an ej on the outer diameter of the bolt holes and the ea82 on the inner diameter. since the crank snout aligns the bolt's job is just to torque it to the motor

 

the crossmember bolts will align mostly, but you will hgave to slot the holes and or grind away the nugget on the motor mount.

 

i managed to get the ej power steering lines to connect to the ea82 lines on the crossmember itself, i has to loosen the bracketry and tweak them a little.

 

the ecu i cut out of the harness with about 10 inches of wire form the clips, then one by onbe wired up each component, making my harness, then solder, tape. the better schematics you have the better you will know whats' what. there will probably be a lot of dead end wiring that wont go to anything.

 

does this car need to run, or just be put together?

 

i went from a n ea82 trashwagon to a ej22 with full time 5spd and 5 lugs in a week. i got about 2 weeks in the harness. but i tool all mine apart before i got very far with it bewcause i came upon a turbo motor

well i decided against it when i get get a 86 rally packaged GL for under $500 that is turbo, then toss on my RX groundFX, the WRX turbo and intercooler from work, and i would be done after exhaust and lowering.
