EJ25 99 Legacy GT to EJ22 Phase II swap, compatibility & other options

Recommended Posts

I have a 99Legacy GT automatic sedan with leaking head gaskets. But with so many variations in this year I am really not certain if I can swap some of the engines I have in.

For spares/swap/parts cars ins I have:

Full car: 99 Legacy Brighton with a Phase II engine and manual transmission

Full car: 91 Legacy Turbo sedan, was an automatic but currently has a 04 wrx manual transmission.

97? EJ25 that was pulled from a wreck, cam sprocket on driver side was crunched, unknown if valves played high five with piston.

93 Turbo engine with wiring harness, ECU,cross member and parts, from an automatic.

Some other EJ22 phase one motors, that have been stored and are of questionable quality.

Trying to figure out what my best solution is here to keep my driver going until I get around to actually building up one of the EJ22T blocks for a proper turbo swap.

  • It seems the 99 EJ22 from a manual won't work as it does not have EGR?
  • I don't really have the time to complete the EJ turbo swap (I think). Engine swap would be ok, wiring would take me some time.
  • Seems like a waste to spend the money on new EJ25 head gaskets when the plan is to do the turbo swap.
  • Possible to swap the 5 speed along with the EJ22 Phase II, but at this point why not spend the time on the turbo swap, and the 04 wrx 5 speed instead.
  • Car does not overheat, but it eats coolant, could keep driving it while topping it off once a week while another engine is preped

Just juggling options here, as time to do anything is quite tight as I moved recently and we have lots of renovation/house work to do among other things. If the 99 2.2 Phase II can be swapped in on a Saturday it would be great as I know it is a good motor.

Hi,

Sounds like you're @ least familiar w/the process...and you've got a nice collection.

No Go on the Phase 2 EJ22- different wiring/harness.

For whatever reason Subaru made the '99 model year a challenge.

All Legacy models (GT and OB) w/the 2.5 use the EJ25D DOHC HEADS, Intake Manifold, and wiring harness,  w/the EJ25 Phase 2 shortblock (might have phase 1 pistons??).

All other Subaru models w/the 2.5 use the complete Phase 2 engine.

Best/easiest option? Just fix the 2.5 that's in there. DO NOT keep driving it as you'll likely ruin the bottom-end, which is already weak, IMHO. If you CAN re-use the other set of '97 DOHC heads, they could get R-n-R'd and be ready for a SaturDAY swap....provided you don't have any other gotchas.

Thanks for the input. That throws out using the 2.2 phase II.

Not finding oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil. I suspect right now the coolant is seeping to the outside on the driver side HG. Thinking of doing dye test before I pull the engine just to confirm.

Could look at rebuilding the 97 long block to swap in.. if required. The HG on that 97 motor could still be good, just have to figure out if I can test it and see if the valves are ok, perhaps it could be a straight drop in if the valves are ok. I know the motor was running when it crashed dukes of hazard style.

I just remembered, I think I have a 97 Legacy GT engine with rod knock in storage, could look into those heads too(But it was a manual 97 GT wagon).

'97 GT FTW! :-)

'97-'99 2.5 all were the same between manual and AT versions - as far as interchange - .....both had EGR. One difference - I think - was the 5-speeds have that T-belt guide over the crank sprocket??

'96 was the HLA heads and I've heard conflicting info about the early 2.5 shortblock - pistons, etc.
