Might just be the tensioner idler bearing for the AC belt. It's the small pulley below the compressor. Those fail pretty often and can be replaced.

Yes the belt can simply be removed. It only drives the AC compressor, so nothing else will be affected by running without it.

I have a 94 legacy wagon, and the ac clutch started making a grinding noise. Since I dong use the AC anyways, can I disconnect the belt that goes around the ac clutch with no issues? 2.2l motor, non turbo. Thank you so much!

Just note you won't have defrost either kinda annoying in the winter.

If it only grinds when the AC is on, unhook the wire on the compressor instead. It'll still spin, but won't actually engage the compressor.

Defrost still works, but you'll loose the dehumidifier effect from the compressor running with defrost. Roll front windows down a bit if muggy in the car until glass dries.
