Feeler: EA81 Reproduction Rubber Windshield Gaskets

Recommended Posts

Hello USMB!

Our beloved EA81 chassis is now well over 30-years-old and the parts supply is rapidly disappearing.  Rubber parts, specifically, are mostly gone.  In fact, RockAuto only lists the front windshield gasket and, as of this post, there is a single gasket left to order.

My proposal is that we, as a community, band together like we did for the Gen-1 windshield gasket group buy, and have a run of parts made for the EA81 chassis.  Right now, I'm thinking of four parts:

  • BRAT/wagon/sedan/hatch front windshield gasket
  • Wagon rear windshield gasket
  • Coupe front/rear windshield gasket

The first part is common across the listed body styles, so that makes perfect sense to me.  I feel like the EA81 wagon is the most common body style still on the road, so it would make sense to target that application as well.  I'm not an expert and have done exactly zero research on that, but it's my gut feeling.  Finally the coupe has unique front and rear windshield gaskets, so it would need its own specific parts.

Based on the previous group buy, I would estimate the cost per gasket to be between $50-80.  These would be BRAND NEW rubber parts, not some 30-year-old NOS that has been sitting on a dusty shelf for the last three decades.

So, who is interested?  The minimum order will likely be around 50-units, so I'd hope we can get close to that number of members committed to buying.

If you have any questions, comments or general input, please reply below and I will update this post with the usernames of interested parties.

These front windscreen rubbers weigh about 2 kg or smidge more and are quite easily obtained here in Australia from a company that does not really do export. I have sent a few to a dude in the UK a few times, and his first shipping container just landed in UK, ful of them ...no, kidding, he got fifteen though :)

try enter www.ebay.com.au  in your address bar, use Brumby windscreen seal see what happens

If anyone outside the US wants some of the above I am happy to help out with international shipping (I am also over in the US in June and October and could hand-carry to save on International shipping).

You can still get regular front second gen windshield gaskets and a windshield for $220 plus or minus installed depending on who you go through. I had 5 done in the past couple of years the gaskets feel soft and smell fresh.

Did you have to source those yourself or was the shop able to do it?

They supply both and install. I just go through the mobile buisnesses since they cost the same and they drive to your house so you don't have to leave your car somewhere. If you do that cut out your chrome strips carefully with a razor blade so they stay intact they're bad at taking them out but good at installing them.

Subaru of America still has quite a few front windshield seals and rear wagon glass seals are still being made. I have been able to buy both and I purchased one more of each on Friday. Hatch seals are no more and I need two of them.

The wagon rear glass seals show on backorder, but it was the same deal when I ordered it the first time. I think they are just being sent from Japan when someone orders one. This has been the case on numerous parts I've ordered for my 84.

It appears that, for the time being, you can still order BRAT/sedan/wagon/hatch front windshield seals from the dealer, so we'll put those on the back burner for now.

I'm in talks with a company that already does some reproduction work and has Subaru applications, but they don't list them on their web page.  I will report back when I have more information, but they have said that we will get a price break at 10+ units per order.

yes thanks freak, You could count me in for 2 rear gen 2 hatch gaskets. and just fyi last I checked you could still get the chrome trim pieces that go with.

where is that?  I haven't seen them listed anywhere and I have called many companies about seals as well as the trim.  BTW I will be screwed when I finally need to replace the rear window seal in the sedan.  no group buy discount.  only one company said they would do it and quoted $20k whether I ordered 1 or 1000.
