ductran Posted May 10, 2016 Share Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) My car is 85 Subaru GL uses EA82 engine with non-turbo cylinder heads as pictures... and valve lifters I purchased new lifters from eBay having diameter = 21 mm (it matches in services manual) following... but when repaired engine, I see my valve lifters having diameter = 20 mm so bought lifters not fit with cylinder heads. Your originals look like this one, for V6 and V8 Dodge/Ford and other makes. Not a EA82 They should be around 2-3/8" in height, and look like this. You stated the old lifters were 20mm and the new ones are 21mm. I think someone changed the sleeves and put the wrong lifters in. See pictures yours top, with the thick sleeves and mine with correct sleeves. Please someone chime in, and let me if crazy assuming that the factory sleeves and lifters(HLA) were changes at some point. maozebong Posted May 12, 2016 Share Posted May 12, 2016 (edited) you don't need to measure that lifter to know its not from an ea82. the top sticks out way farther and the sleeve in the head is visibly thicker than anything subaru uses. id be willing to bet its a common press fit bushing, or possibly a journal bearing, milled to fit the lifter of choice. its common in old school 2nd/3rd world machine shops to use commonly available parts over the correct parts. i personally think you should disassemble them and clean them if you don't have the resources for another set of heads. the common problem is that an internal check valve gets stuck open, as its a dead end for the oil feed. edit: if its currently 20mm and your new lifters are 21mm, get a brake cylinder hone an widen them out until your new lifters have a tight fit, a .25mm clearance. jono Posted May 12, 2016 Share Posted May 12, 2016 might also pay to measure the depth of the recess in case they have been made deeper to take the 20mm HVLA's. Just measured mine to the high side of the brass? bushing insert ~30mm some clever machinist made do with what was available and must have machined up something to be able to use smaller diameter HVLA as said before , ductran, can you post a pic of your old next to the new 21mm ones? Yes, surely a machine shop can increase the ID of your bushings in the heads to suit the factory HVLAs you have now - see if you can find the specs in the manual.
