Hello all-

I am new to the forum, and have a question about my 1996 Subaru Outback AWD:

The other day I started the car and after about 30 seconds the "AT OIL TEMP" light started blinking and the engine shut off as I was driving. I waited a few minutes, and started the car again with no problem. However, the "AT OIL TEMP" light now comes on whenever I start the car, then quickly turns off. I have noticed that the car seems to have lost a bit of power/pick-up since this incident. Also, whenever I use the windshield wiping fluid, I can smell it (or at least an alcohol smell) inside the car - which has never happened before.

Are all these incidents related? Does anyone have an idea of what the problem is? ATF? Filter?

I'd greatly appreciate suggestions....

Thanks

Blinking AT temp means AT TCU error message. The codes are stored in TCU memory. There is a complex procedure to get the code by counting the blinks. If you use proper search, you will find the procedure posted on the net (applicable to old and new subs, TCU is not included in OBD2).

No, I don't think the smell is related unless you are smelling burnt ATF and not alcohol...

I also have somewhat of AT oil temp light issue. I bought my 98 OBW used and since I've owned the AT OIL TEMP light comes on for about 5 sec.s steady when I start the car. I have experienced no AT problems however.

This is normal, as this the check for burned bulb.

Blinking light is abnormal becouse it indicates error registered by TCU.

Solid AT temp during driving means overheated AT. I could never find out though what temp triggers the light (never happened to me).
